Winny Chebet (born December 20, 1990 in Kericho ) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner .

Athletic career

Winny Chebet gained her first international experience at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakech , where she won the silver medal in the 800-meter run in 2: 08.15 minutes . At the Junior World Championships in Beijing the following year, she also won the silver medal in 2: 04.59 minutes, this time behind Olga Cristea from Moldova . In 2007 she again took part in the World Youth Championships in Ostrava , but was disqualified there in the final. In 2008 she was fifth at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz in 2: 04.13 min and the following year she won the Junior African Championships in Bambous in 3: 48.99 min with the Kenyan 4 x 400 meter relay while she was in 2: 01.36 min won the silver medal over 800 meters behind the South African Caster Semenya . In 2010 she finished fifth at the African Championships in Nairobi in 2: 03.02 min and was seventh at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2: 11.58 min.

Two years later she qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Moscow , where she was eliminated with 2: 01.04 min in the semifinals. In 2015 she won the bronze medal with the relay at the Africa Games in Brazzaville in 3: 35.91 minutes and finished fifth in the 800 meter competition in 2: 02.67 minutes. The following year she qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she reached the semi- finals, in which she was eliminated with 2:01.90 minutes. In 2017 she took part in the 1500 meter run at the World Championships in London , where she was eliminated in the semifinals with 4: 06.29 min . At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham she was eliminated over 800 meters with 2: 18.31 min in the first round and was fifth over 1500 meters in 4: 12.08 min. At the beginning of April she again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and was eliminated there with 4: 20.67 minutes in the first round. Then she won the African Championships in Asaba in 4: 14.02 min.

In 2009 and 2013 Chebet was Kenyan champion in the 800-meter run and in 2018 and 2019 in the 1500-meter run.
