Rudolf Floss
Rudolf Floss (born January 19, 1935 in Crimmitschau ) is a German civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .
Life
Floss studied civil engineering at the TU Dresden and received a diploma in 1959. From 1960 he was at the Federal Highway Research Institute in Cologne, where he was the head of the earthworks and foundation engineering department until 1980. In 1970 he received his doctorate under Friedrich Tölke at the University of Stuttgart and was a lecturer in earthwork technology at the University of Karlsruhe from 1970 to 1975 . In 1980 he became professor for foundation engineering and soil mechanics at the Technical University of Munich and director of the testing office at the Technical University of Munich. In 2001 he retired.
He recognized the importance of reinforced earthworks and geosynthetics early on and was considered an expert in this field. He also dealt with compaction control and compaction methods in earthworks and road construction, sealing, filter and drainage materials, among other things, in landfills and in environmental technology and drainage methods.
From 1988 he headed the geosynthetics section in geotechnical engineering at DGGT. Since 1971 he has been on the board of DGGT.
In 1991 he received the VDI Medal of Honor and in 1993 the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. In 1996 the Research Association for Roads and Transport made him an honorary member. In 2000 he received an honorary doctorate from TU Cottbus .
