Sofia Assefa (born November 14, 1987 ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who specializes in the obstacle course .

Athletic career

Assefa took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but could not qualify for the final. The following year she finished 13th at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin and fourth at the World Athletics Finals in Thessaloniki.

At the 2010 African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Assefa won the silver medal in the obstacle course behind the Kenyan Milcah Chemos Cheywa . She also reached third place at the Athletics Continental Cup in Split and won the race at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels. In 2011 she improved the Ethiopian record in the obstacle course at the Golden Gala in Rome to 9: 15.04 min. At the World Championships in Daegu she was sixth. Four years after Beijing, Assefa not only made it into the finals at the Olympic Games in London, but also won a medal. She took the silver medal in 9: 09.84 minutes.

In 2017, she improved the national record she held in Hengelo to 9: 07.06 min and thus qualified for the World Championships in London . There she struggled with problems in the run-up and could not qualify for the final .
