Brian Saunders (athlete)

Brian Saunders (born July 9, 1952 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a former Canadian sprinter who specialized in the 400-meter run .

In 1975 he won bronze over 400 m at the Universiade . At the Pan American Games in Mexico City , he was sixth in the individual competition and took bronze in the 4 x 400 meter relay .

In 1976 he reached the quarter-finals at the Olympic Games in Montreal over 400 m . In the final of the 4 x 400 meter relay , he came fourth with Ian Seale , Don Domansky and Leighton Hope , with the Canadian quartet setting the current national record with 3: 02.64 minutes.

At the Athletics World Cup in 1977 in Düsseldorf he came in third place with the American 4 x 400 meter relay. In 1978 he finished eighth over 400m at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and came fourth in the Canadian 4-by-400-meter relay, and in 1979 he was fifth over 400m at the Pan American Games in San Juan .

At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , he reached the semi-finals with the Canadian relay. In 1984 he retired from the Olympic Games in Los Angeles over 400 m in the preliminary run and came in eighth place in the 4-by-400-meter relay .

He was Canadian champion four times (1975, 1987, 1979, 1983). On August 12, 1977, he set a Canadian record in Guadalajara with 45.68 seconds, which was broken in 1986 by Atlee Mahorn .

His marriage to British sprinter Andrea Lynch ended in divorce.
