Steven Gardiner (born September 12, 1995 on Moore's Island ) is a Bahamian sprinter who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

Steven Gardiner gained his first international experience in 2014 at the CARIFTA Games 2014 in Fort-de-France , where he finished fourth in the 200-meter run in 20.87 seconds and won the Bahamian 4-by-100-meter Relay won the silver medal in 40.35 s, while he won bronze with the 4 x 400 meter relay after 3: 11.32 min. He then took part in the Junior World Championships in Eugene over 200 meters , where he was eliminated in the semifinals with 20.89 s and reached sixth place in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 08.08 min. At the IAAF World Relays 2015 in the Bahamas, he finished second behind the United States with the 4 x 400 meter relay in 2: 58.91 minutes. Shortly afterwards he set up a new national record at the national championships in Nassau with 44.27 s and thus qualified for the world championships in Beijing , where he reached the semifinals . He was also disqualified in the 4 x 400 meter relay with the Bahamian team in the preliminary run. The following year, he took the first time at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , winning there in relay contest in 2: 58.49 min the bronze medal behind the United States and Jamaica. In addition, he reached the semi-finals in the individual competition , in which he was eliminated with 44.72 s.

At the IAAF World Relays 2017 he won the mixed relay in 3: 14.42 minutes and retired from the men's relay with 3: 05.37 minutes in advance. But he qualified again over 400 meters for the World Championships in London , where he won the silver medal behind the South African Wayde van Niekerk with 44.41 s in the final . Two years later he reached the finals at the World Championships in Doha and won there with a new national record of 43.48 s, making it the second Bahamas world champion over this distance after Avard Moncur .
