Vilafamés (Spanish Villafamés) is a Spanish municipality in the Valencian Community in the province of Castellón . It is located in the Comarca Plana Alta in the northern center of the region.

It has a favorable strategic location on a hill at the north end of the Sierra de les Conteses, which is largely forested with pine trees (mainly Pinus halepensis), with a view of the agricultural plain and beyond to the north. Vilafamés is located in the transition area to the inland and the coast with mild winters and hot summers.

Vilafamés is bordered by Vall d'Alba to the north, Useras and Costur to the west, Sant Joan de Moró and Borriol to the south and la Pobla Tornesa and Cabanes to the east .

history

During the Spanish Civil War , the government of the Spanish Republic built a field airfield for their air forces northeast of the town on the plain below . After Franco's troops took the area, the Spanish nationals continued to use the area, including the German Condor Legion , which supported the putschists . The former airfield area has been open to the public since 2018.
