Segorbe ( Valencian / Catalan : Sogorb ) is a small town in the province of Castellón in the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia . It is located on the banks of the Palancia River about 55 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Castellón de la Plana , 33 kilometers northwest of Sagunto and 56 kilometers north of Valencia in the Alto Palancia district , whose district capital is Segorbe. On January 1, 2019, Segorbe had 8978 inhabitants.

history

The village, established as Segobriga in antiquity, became a bishopric under the Visigoths in the 6th century and was the seat of a briefly independent Moorish emirate in the second half of the 11th century (under Ibn Yasin), before becoming part of the Reconquista in the 13th century of the Kingdom of Aragon and seat of the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón (until 1953).

Segorbe has been an important center for ceramics and pottery production since ancient times.

Remains of the city castle or city gates, the Gothic cathedral of Segorbe , the palace of the Dukes of Medinaceli, which is now the city hall, the 13th century church of San Pedro, the 17th century church of San Martin and are historically worth seeing the nearby source of the 50 provinces . The annual bull and horse driving is significant for tourism.
