description

The cathedral for the 6th century diocese was built from the 13th century. It was built on the remains of an old mosque on the southern city wall. The medieval building in Gothic style was consecrated in 1534. From the single-nave cathedral without a transept, the side chapels extend between the buttresses , the choir closes with an octagonal apse .

Between 1791 and 1795 the church was redesigned under Bishop Gómez de Ahedo according to the design of the architect Vicente Gascó Masot. The implementation was carried out by the builders Francisco Marzo and Mariano Llisterri. The interior was clad and renovated in the classical style , the choir was enlarged. The fresco Coronación de la Virgen is by Luis Planes and Manuel Camarón, the fresco El Retablo de la Cena is attributed to Joan Reixach. The originally Gothic character of the church is barely recognizable, only a few chapel ceilings have concealed rib vaults . The baroque choir stalls date from the 18th century.

To the right of the portal from the 16th and 17th centuries rises the trapezoidal bell tower. The two-tier cloister has been preserved in the Valencian Gothic style, with the chapter house from the 15th century starting from it. The Cathedral Museum is located on the second floor of the cloister , it has a very valuable art collection, mainly religious paintings from the 14th to 16th centuries.
