Benicarló is a municipality in the Spanish province of Castellón in the north of the Valencian Community . It is located on the Mediterranean coast and is a popular destination for national and international tourism .
Transport and economy
In addition to tourism, agriculture also plays a major economic role, especially the cultivation of artichokes . The artichoke is part of the Benicarló coat of arms, and the Fiesta de la Alcachofa ( artichoke festival) is celebrated annually . Benicarló has a port and a fishing fleet of more than 50 vessels, bringing in an average of 1,500,000 kg of marine animals each year, including red mullet, monkfish, octopus and sole. Viticulture, which was the town's most important economic activity in the 19th century, ceased after a phylloxera plague in which almost all vines perished.
