El Fadrí (German: The Unmarried ) is the free-standing bell tower of the co- cathedral Santa María in Castellón de la Plana, Spain . The bell tower is registered as a Cultural Heritage of the Valencian Community and the symbol of the city.
location
The El Fadrí bell tower is located in the main square (Spanish: Plaça Major ) in the city center of Castellón de la Plana a few meters west of the Santa María co-cathedral. The city hall is located in the immediate vicinity on the western edge of the main square. On the opposite side is the city's central market hall .
history
Construction of the bell tower began in 1440 and was not completed until 1604. There have been long discussions about what the tower should look like. The completed building was ultimately a project by Francisco Galiansa de la Lancha, Guillelm del Rei, Pedro Crosali, Marc Volsanys, Antoni and Joan Saura.
The history of the co-cathedral is marked by several destruction of the building and subsequent reconstructions. The bell tower, however, remained largely undamaged. Only the spire was destroyed in 1656 and replaced true to the original in 1735.
architecture
The bell tower was built in the sober style of the Valencian Gothic . It has an octagonal floor plan and a height of 58 meters.
The tower is divided into the clock chamber, the church prison, the bell-ringer's apartment and the bell room. These four rooms do not exactly correspond to the lines of the outer cornices . At the top of the tower there is a parapet decorated with eight gargoyles . The spire is shaped like a pyramid and decorated with blue tiles.
