Manuel Sáez (* 1961 in Castellón ) is a Spanish plastic artist and belongs to the generation of artists from the 1980s. He has lived and worked in Valencia since 1984 .

Life

Sáez is one of the most important artists around the turn of the century and according to the Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada Europeo-Americana Manuel Sáez approaches the world of objects and portraits in a sensual and psychological way.

In the 1980s he worked in Barcelona , Valencia and Madrid . During this time, the artist explored the playful image of painting and its history with the help of the flawless language of comics, media and art history.

The series Calvos , Bodegones , Árboles , Aviones and Arquitecturas correspond to this era . In 1990 he resided in Rome on a scholarship from the Academia de España en Roma and completed a series of portraits under the title Biografía no autorizada . In 1992 he created the series Dioptrias and in 1993 the Aquiles . In 1995 he moved to the Dominican Republic . He painted drawings and watercolors of objects from the tropical landscape, which he exhibited a year later at the Universitat de València . Since 2004 his work has concentrated more and more on the study of flawless drawing and the portrait series, on which he has been working since 1990.

Manuel Sáez has exhibited both in Spain and abroad. He has also carried out various interventions in public space, including the huge ceramic mosaic of 1884 m² for the agora of the University of Castellón.

His work has been exhibited in museums as well as in public institutions. In 1996 his first retrospective took place, Colección Exclusiva 1984–1995, in Valencia in the Club Diario Levante, Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid , in the Sala Verónicas in Murcia, in the Diputación de Castellón and in the Brocense in Cáceres. This was followed by solo and group exhibitions, such as in 1991 in the Fundació La Caixa in Valencia, 1996 in the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 2000 in the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Ciudad de México , 2000 in the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern in Valencia, 1999 in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo) in Montevideo , 2003 in the Atarazanas in Valencia and 2008 in the Sala Parpalló in Valencia.

In his career, he has already received numerous prizes and grants, including the Premio Icaro, Grupo 16, Madrid, 1990, the Creación Artística Banesto grant, 1989, el salón de Otoño de Sagunto, 1983 and the Academia Española de Bellas grant Artes de Roma 1990.

Works and projects

Sáez has developed a personal aesthetic, characterized by a flawless drawing, with which he subjects the world of colors, shapes, nature and objects to constant investigation. His work is characterized by a poetics that express everyday life and the intimate. In 2003 he realized a mosaic of 1848 sqm of 13,046 individual parts into 33 × 33 cm and 14,884 individual parts, to 16.25 × 16.25 cm in white and blue porcelain sandstone for the Agora of the University Jaume I . The picture shows a white glove and symbolizes knowledge.
