Juan Antonio Orenga Forcada (born July 29, 1966 in Castellón de la Plana ) is a Spanish basketball coach and former player.

career

player

Juan Antonio Orenga began his career in Real Madrid's youth . With the "Royal" he made his debut in the first team in the 1983/84 season and also won the championship that season . From 1984 to 1988 he played for the smaller Madrid clubs CB Collado Villalba and CD Caja Madrid before he was signed by CB Estudiantes in the summer of 1988 . In the 1990/91 season he reached the final of the Spanish Cup with his team , but failed there at FC Barcelona . For his good individual performances he was named MVP of the tournament. In the 1991/92 season Orenga and his club finally won the cup with a 61:56 against CAI Zaragoza and also reached the final four of the European Cup in that season .

For the 1996/97 season Orenga returned to his youth club Real Madrid and won the Eurocup in his first year with a 78:64 against Mash Verona .

After two seasons with the "Royal" , Juan Antonio Orenga moved to Unicaja Málaga , where he reached the final in the Korać Cup in 1999/2000 . His team was defeated there, however, Limoges CSP .

In 2000 he moved to Cáceres CB , where he finally ended his career during the 2002/03 season.

National team

Juan Antonio Orenga took part as a junior with Spain at the U-16 European Championship in 1983 in Tübingen , where his team only failed in the final against Yugoslavia. He celebrated his first game for the senior national team on November 24, 1988 against Switzerland . At the 1991 European basketball championship , he won the bronze medal with Spain. He was part of the squad for the 1992 Olympic Games , for the 1994 and 1998 World Championships and for the 1993 , 1995 and 1997 European Championships , but did not succeed in another podium finish. In total, he made 128 appearances in the Spanish national team.

Trainer

Juan Antonio Orenga's first position as head coach was his ex-club CB Estudiantes , which he was in charge of in the 2005/06 season. In January, however, he was released due to unsuccessfulness. Then Orenga moved to the coaching staff of the Spanish Association , where he was able to celebrate successes as a coach of various junior national teams. With the U-20 he won the silver medal in 2007, bronze in 2010 and finally gold in 2011. He looked after the Spanish U-19 at the 2009 World Cup and with the U-18 he won the prestigious Albert Schweitzer tournament in 2012 . He also worked as assistant coach for the senior national team from 2008 to 2012 , before taking over the post of national coach on November 28, 2012.
