Sergio Llull Melià (born November 15, 1987 in Maó , Menorca ) is a Spanish basketball player in the service of Real Madrid . Llull is a so-called combo guard who, thanks to his athleticism, speed and ability to score , can be used effectively not only in the position of the point guard , but also that of the shooting guard .

career

Club career

Sergio Llull, who is 1.92 meters tall, began his career in his hometown, in the youth of CB La Salle Maó. He attracted attention when he scored 71 points and distributed 19 assists in a game against CB Jovent D'Alaior on November 6, 2002 . His team ultimately won the match 115: 107. In 2003 he moved to CB i Unió Manresana , the youth department of Ricoh Manresa , and played the first half of the 2005/06 season in the first team of Finques Olesa in the Liga EBA , the fourth division in Spain. On January 18, 2006, he made his debut in the ACB League for Ricoh Manresa. After the relegation of the Catalans and a season with them in the LEB , Llull finally moved in May 2007, at the age of only 19, to Real Madrid , with whom he played the championship playoffs and won the title that same year.

In the 2009 NBA draft , Llull was selected 34th by the Denver Nuggets , but transferred to the Houston Rockets for the record sum of 2.25 million US dollars . This was the highest sum ever paid for a second round pick.

In the 2010/11 season he and his team reached the Final Four of the ULEB Euroleague for the first time in 15 years , and for his good individual performances he was also elected to the All-Euroleague Second Team . In February 2012 he won the Spanish Cup with Real Madrid with a 91:74 in the final against arch-rivals FC Barcelona , he himself had 23 points and five assists and was named MVP of the competition. At the end of the regular season of the Spanish championship, fans, players, coaches and media representatives voted him the best point guard in the ACB league's all-tournament team. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he and his team won the Spanish Supercup , he also reached the final of the Euroleague with Real Madrid and ended the year with a victory in the championship .

National team

Sergio Llull played for his country as a junior and won the U-18 European Championship in 2004. On August 18, 2009, he made his debut in a friendly against Cuba in the Spanish senior team . At the European Championships in Poland in 2009 , he won the gold medal with Spain. The following year he took part with the national team at the Basketball World Cup in Turkey , the Iberians took sixth place. At the EM 2011 he was again part of the Spanish squad and was able to successfully defend the title with his team. Llull played the 2012 Olympic Games with Spain in London , where he and his team only failed in the final against the USA team .
