Rudolf Taschner

Rudolf Taschner (born March 30, 1953 in Ternitz , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian mathematician , author and politician ( ÖVP ). From 2017 to 2019 he was a member of the Austrian National Council . Since January 9, 2020, he has been a member of the National Council again.

Life

Rudolf Taschner graduated at the high school of the Teresian Academy and studied at the Vienna University of mathematics and physics under Professor Edmund Hlawka , Johann Cigler and Peter Hertel, his doctorate there in 1976 sub auspiciis and has worked since 1977 at the Technical University of Vienna at the Institute for Analysis and Scientific Computing .

In 1981 he received his habilitation at the Technical University of Vienna (habilitation thesis: Discrepancies between equally distributed consequences and functions ). Since 1997 he has been working there as an associate professor .

Taschner is committed to making mathematics accessible to the public and, together with his wife Bianca, created the math.space project , which opened in 2003 and closed at the end of 2017. With his popular science lectures and publications, he tried to bring his subject closer to people.

In 2004 he was named Scientist of the Year by Austrian science journalists . The press nicknamed him " Marcel Prawy of Mathematics". His book Arithmetic with God and the World was voted Favorite Book 2010. In 2010 he was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . He received the City of Vienna Prize for Popular Education for 2011. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Upper Austrian think tank Academia Superior , which was founded in December 2010 .

In the 2017 National Council election, Rudolf Taschner took the 7th place on the ÖVP's federal list as a free member and was sworn in as a member of the National Council on November 9, 2017 . After the National Council election in 2019 , he resigned from the National Council. Since January 9, 2020, he has been a member of the National Council again. He succeeded Karl Nehammer , who was Minister of the Interior in the Federal Government Kurz II .

Taschner is married and has a daughter and a son.

Political comments

From 2006 to 2017, Taschner regularly wrote comments in the cross-written section of the Austrian daily Die Presse , often on non-mathematical topics. He considers the fear of the possible consequences of global warming to be exaggerated and describes the fight against it as "climate change mania" and a "pseudo problem" speaks out against the central school- leaving exam in mathematics and holds a partial central school leaving examination (half of the tasks are created by the ministry , the other half from the class teacher) makes more sense. One could thus combine the basic computational skills with other goals of the lesson more coherently.

Taschner believes that Austria should withdraw from the PISA studies . For Taschner, the low average retirement age in Austria is “unparalleled madness.” In order to ensure stable funding for pensions, he calls for the retirement age to be raised to 70 years. In connection with the European Monetary Union , which according to Taschner was wrongly introduced , he calls for the willingness to take back what was wrong. He sees the extension of the legislative period from four to five years as more harmful than useful. Taschner is a regular author for the Axis of the Good blog .
