Francisco Alberto Angulo Espinosa (born June 19, 1970 in Saragossa ) is a Spanish basketball coach , official and former player.

career

Alberto Angulo began his career in the youth of CB Saragossa . At the club of his hometown, the Shooting Guard made his professional debut on September 30, 1989 in a league game against CB OAR Ferrol . His club won the Spanish Cup that season . In the 1990/91 season, the 20-year-old Angulo moved to the second division club CajaBadajoz . After another year with first division club Baloncesto León , with whom he surprisingly reached third place in the regular season of the Spanish championship and failed in the play-off for the title in the quarter-finals to CB Estudiantes , Angulo returned to CB Saragossa.

With the Aragonese he reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1992/93 , but failed there with his team at the eventual winner Aris Thessaloniki . In the 1994/95 season, CB Saragossa came to the final of the Spanish Cup, where the Taugrés lost with 80:88.

In the summer of 1996, the professional team of his club disbanded due to financial difficulties and Alberto Angulo then signed for the Spanish top club Real Madrid . With the capital city he was able to win an international title in his first season, in the final of the Eurocup 1996/97 the "Royal" prevailed with 78:64 against Scaligera Basket Verona . He achieved another success with his team in the 1999/2000 season. Real Madrid surprisingly beat arch-rivals FC Barcelona 3-2 in the final of the Spanish championship and Alberto Angulo, who averaged 15.6 points in the five games in the series, was elected MVP .

In the summer of 2002 Alberto Angulo moved within the ACB League to CE Lleida Bàsquet , where he spent three seasons before signing for Basket Saragossa 2002 in 2005 . He ended his active career in 2007 in his hometown.

National team

Alberto Angulo made his debut for the Spanish national team on June 3, 1993 in a friendly against Russia . He was in the finals of the Iberians at both the 1995 and 1997 European Championships . He was also in the squad for the 1998 World Cup and finished the tournament with his team in fifth place. Alberto Angulo celebrated his greatest success at the European Championships in 1999 , where the Spaniards only failed in the final with 56:64 against Italy and took silver. His last appearance in the ranks of the national team, he finally had at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , where the Iberians could only occupy the disappointing ninth place. In total, Alberto Angulo played 98 games with Spain.

Trainer and functionary

After his playing career, Alberto Angulo moved to the club management of Basket Saragossa in 2002 , where he worked as sports director and coach of the farm team Baloncesto El Olivar . In January 2009 he took over the post of head coach of Basket Saragossa, but could not prevent his team from relegating to the second division .

In summer 2009 he moved to Real Madrid , where he works as director of the youth department.

Alberto Angulo's three years younger brother Lucio was also a professional basketball player. Both played on the same team at CB Saragossa from 1994 to 1996 and at Real Madrid from 1999 to 2002 .
