Tomás Monje Gutiérrez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tomás Monje Gutiérrez (born December 21, 1884 in Coroico ; † July 1, 1959 in La Paz ) was a Bolivian politician , lawyer and judge at the "Corte Superior de Justicia". From August 15, 1946 to April 10, 1947 he was the 41st President of Bolivia.

Life

From a young age Tomás Monje Gutiérrez stood on the side of the socialist movement in Bolivia. He studied law and followed a career in the judicial service up to the office of chairman of the Supreme Court.

He was appointed president by the leaders of the coup against President Gualberto Villarroel López in his capacity as the country's highest-ranking judge. In itself, this should have happened immediately after President Villarroel was overthrown. However, Monje was initially unable to take the oath of office due to illness, so that his deputy at the court, Néstor Guillén Olmos , was called in, who remained president for 27 days until Monje recovered.

President Monje took office in a severe economic crisis with growing impoverishment of a large part of the population. Monje signed a 14-point charter for the preservation of all social achievements for the “common people” ( gente humilde ) and in particular for the workers. He also had the constitution changed and - that was his main task as interim president - prepared new elections. Then he handed over his office to the election winner Enrique Hertzog Garaizabal .
