Coroico is a country town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Coroico is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Coroico and the seat of the administration of the province of Nor Yungas . The village is located at an altitude of 1751 m on a mountain spur above the valley of the Río Coroico .
geography
Coroico lies in the transition area between the Altiplano and the Cordillera Real in the west and the foothills of the Amazon lowlands in the east. The region's climate is typical of the time of day , with the mean temperature fluctuation during the day being more pronounced than during the seasons.
The annual precipitation here in the subtropical Yungas is 1100 mm (see Coroico climate diagram) and has a clear dry season from May to August and a rainy season from December to February. The monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 20 ° C and 25 ° C, during the day it is warm in summer and pleasantly cool at night.
Transport network
Coroico is located at a distance of 87 kilometers by road northeast of La Paz , the capital of the department.
From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 3 leads north-east for 52 kilometers to Cotapata . Directly behind Cotapata, the road splits, the asphalted and newly developed route leads into the valley of the Río Coroico and via Santa Bárbara another 515 kilometers to Trinidad on the Río Mamoré . The unpaved gravel road behind Cotapata, the Ruta de la muerte ("Road of Death"), which branches off from Ruta 3 to the southeast, leads directly to Coroico, but is not recommended because of its dangerousness.

Due to the historical population development, the Aymara population is predominant in the Municipio Coroico , 62.1 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
Cityscape
The village is a picturesque tourist center and has numerous restaurants, cafes and accommodation facilities.
economy
Since the mid-1990s, a growing middle class of traders and traders has developed. Drinking water for Coroico, however, has to be laboriously brought overland from La Paz in large canisters due to the ailing and poorly developed pipeline system.
