Baloncesto León was a Spanish basketball club from León .

history

The association was founded in 1981. Started in the fourth league, they rose to the second highest division, Liga Española de Baloncesto , in 1986 . In the 1989/90 season, the team finished second after the main round. In the subsequent play-offs for promotion they prevailed and got into the first division, the ACB league . While the team was only just able to hold the league in the first season in the upper house, it increased in the following years. In 1992 and 1993 the quarterfinals of the play-offs for the championship were reached. CB Estudiantes and Real Madrid prevailed against León there.

In 1993, the team also made it to the quarterfinals of the Korać Cup , a European basketball cup .

After three years in which they ended up in midfield after the main round and missed the play-offs, the advance into the quarter-finals succeeded again in the 1996/97 season. Like five years ago, they were eliminated from CB Estudiantes . This should be the last participation in play-offs for the Spanish title. In the 1999/00 season Baloncesto León rose from last place after ten years of permanent membership in the first division.

After seven years and several narrow failures, it worked in 2007 with promotion back to the ACB league. That year, the club also won the Spanish basketball cup for second division clubs, Copa Principe de Asturias . Back in League 1, the club could not build on the Konstanz in the 90s and had to relegate directly. This was followed by three appearances in the quarter-finals in the fight for promotion, all of which were lost. After the 2011/12 season, the club could no longer maintain the game operation due to high debt and dissolved.

With Fundación Baloncesto León there is a new association in Leòn.
