El Tatu is a music label from Portugal that occasionally publishes books.

History and repertoire

It was founded in 1989 by Tim , the singer of the successful punk / rock band Xutos & Pontapés . He had been thinking about founding an independent label for a long time to give the growing underground a platform. When the up-and-coming punk band Censurados , who had already been invited by the Xutos & Pontapés several times as support act , were unable to release their debut album on the financially troubled independent label Ama Romanta , Tim took this as an opportunity to start the label with the release of the Censurados album in 1990.

The new label then gained increasing attention in the country's music scene, especially in the early 1990s. El Tatu became an unusually professional independent label, which released records of up-and-coming groups of different styles. These include the first two albums by Censurados, the debut album by the folk-punk band Ex-Votos of the first Xutos & Pontapés singer Zé Leonel, and the compilation of avant-garde jazz and improvisation music Em tempo real . The re-release of earlier Xutos & Pontapés recordings and the first album by the well-known comedy rockabilly / surf / ska band Ena Pá 2000 around the charismatic artist, actor and presidential candidate Manuel João Vieira should also be mentioned.

In the past few years, El Tatu has appeared less as a label. Tim's last solo releases appeared here, including u. a. Companheiros de Aventura (2010) also published in book format with well-known guest musicians . Even before that, El Tatu had occasionally published books, such as the photobiography Fotobiografia Xutos & Pontapés - XX anos , for the 20th anniversary of the band in December 1998.
