society
Jasikevičius comes from Kanaus, his mother Rita was a Soviet national handball player, his father Linas table tennis champion of the USSR.
In 1993 Jasikevičius went to the United States and attended Solanco High School in the state of Pennsylvania for a year , then the University of Maryland . There he played for four years, from 1994 to 1998, and scored an average of 7.7 points in 120 games. In the 1998 NBA Draft none of the then 29 NBA teams selected him, and so Jasikevičius returned to Lithuania for one season to the top team Lietuvos rytas Vilnius . Via the BC Olimpia Ljubljana station, he came to FC Barcelona in autumn 2000 , with whom he won the EuroLeague in 2003 . After winning the European Championship in 2003, he was signed by the Israeli series champion Maccabi Tel Aviv , with whom he also won the EuroLeague in 2004 and 2005.
After repeatedly winning the EuroLeague in 2005, Jasikevičius accepted a contract offer from Indiana Pacers for $ 12 million for three years. In the Pacers Jasikevičius was mostly used as a replacement for Jamaal Tinsley . During his debut season, he averaged 7.3 points and 3.0 assists in 35 games. He set a Pacers rookie record for converted three-point throws (86). He was also selected for the NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge .
On January 17, 2006 Jasikevičius was handed over to the Golden State Warriors along with Al Harrington , Stephen Jackson and Josh Powell . In exchange, Mike Dunleavy , Troy Murphy , Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod went to the Pacers. Jasikevičius was under contract with the Warriors until September 20, 2007.
On September 25, 2007, the Greek record champions Panathinaikos Athens announced the commitment of Jasikevičius. The Lithuanian signed a two-year contract that guaranteed him an annual salary of 4.2 million euros. Jasikevičius was at that time the highest paid player in European basketball history. During his career he played for coaching greats like Aito Garcia Reneses , Pini Gershon , Jonas Kazlauskas , Don Nelson , Zeljko Obradovic , Xavi Pascual and Svetislav Pesic .
National team
He was able to repeat his strong performances during the European Championships in 2003 at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . In the preliminary round game against the USA he scored seven three-point goals and thus led the Lithuanian national team to a historic 94:90 victory over the US selection. However, Jasikevičius could not repeat this performance in the following defeats of his team in the semifinals against Italy and in the game for bronze (again against the USA).
Coaching career
After the end of his playing career in 2014, Jasikevičius took over the position of assistant coach to Gintaras Krapikas at Žalgiris Kaunas . Between 2016 and 2020 he was the head coach of Žalgiris, he led the team in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 to win the Lithuanian championship, in 2017, 2018 and 2020 he also won the cup competition with Kaunas. At the beginning of July 2020 he was signed by FC Barcelona .
recognition
Jasikevičius was considered the best European point guard alongside Tony Parker . In 2002 he was named the best player in Lithuania, and in 2004 he came in second place (behind Dirk Nowitzki ) when the Gazzetta dello Sport voted for the best player in Europe . The hobby journalists on the website Eurobasket.com voted him the best point guard in Europe in 2003 and 2004 and in 2004 (unanimously) also the best basketball player in Europe. After winning the final of the Euroleague in 2005, he was named the best player of the final.
