Josh Powell (born January 25, 1983 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is an American basketball player . Powell did not jump directly from college to the highest endowed professional league NBA , but as a supplementary player he later won two NBA championships in 2009 and 2010 with the Los Angeles Lakers and a runner-up with the Dallas Mavericks in 2006. Powell, who also played in Europe and Asia was active, later also won the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 with the Greek champions Olympiacos Piraeus.

Career

After graduating from school in Riverdale (Georgia) Powell went to study at North Carolina State University in Raleigh , where he played for the college team Wolfpack from 2001 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of the NCAA . After just two years, he finished his studies and signed up for the NBA Entry Draft , but this turned out to be premature because he was not selected by any club in the 2003 NBA Draft . Since he was prevented from returning to the college league due to the regulations of the NCAA, he began a professional career in Europe. After a few months for the Lokomotiv from Rostov club in what was then the highest Russian division, Superleague Russia , he moved to Italy in December 2003 , where he played Legadue in the second division for the Scafati club in Campania . In the summer of 2004 and the following year he played in the Minor League World Basketball Association for the Southern Crescent Lightning in Georgia , with whom he was runner-up in this league in 2004. In the European 2004/05 season he was again active in the Legadue this time for Scafati's regional competitor from Caserta .

Despite the detours in lower-class leagues, Powell finally got a contract in the highest-endowed professional league NBA four years after starting his studies in 2005 when the Dallas Mavericks signed him for the NBA 2005/06 . In the Mavericks, he only got a few minutes of action, but increased after injuries to Josh Howard and Keith Van Horn . After he had been given to the farm team Fort Worth Flyers in the NBA Development League (D-League) for a few missions at the end of February 2006 , he came in the play-offs of the NBA on six short-minute missions when the Mavericks against the final series the Miami Heat still lost. In the summer of 2006 Powell came in a player swap to the Indiana Pacers, in which he had only seven appearances before he was in another player swap in January 2007 to the Golden State Warriors. In the Warriors Powell came at least 34 missions until the end of the season, when the Warriors in the NBA 2006/07 in the first play-off round almost sensationally defeated his former team and the former runner-up Mavericks. After the Warriors were eliminated in the following play-off series against the Utah Jazz themselves, Powell got a contract for the NBA 2007/08 with the Clippers from Los Angeles , where his playing time increased to just under 20 minutes per game and he temporarily belonged to the Starting Five . The Clippers, however, clearly missed participation in the play-offs.

After his time with the Clippers, Powell signed a contract with local rivals Lakers in 2008. He was a reserve player for the Lakers, where his playing time dropped to just under ten minutes per game, and was the number 21. With the Lakers, he won the championship in the NBA playoffs in 2009 , when they won 4-1 in the final won against the Orlando Magic . He and the Lakers were able to defend this title in 2010 against the Boston Celtics 4: 3 in the final. After two years with the Lakers Powell got a contract with the Atlanta Hawks for the NBA 2010/11 , where he played again in Georgia near his home. But even with the Hawks Powell was only a supplementary player with a good twelve minutes playing time per game in 54 missions. For the 2011/12 season Powell finally moved to the Chinese Basketball Association (ChBA), where he played for the Dinosaurs from Liaoning . In the 2012/13 season Powell got a contract with the Greek champions Olympiacos from Piraeus , who was able to successfully defend his title win in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 . In the Greek championship, however, the title was lost to the eternal rival and record champion Panathinaikos Athens .

In the 2013/14 season Powell first played again in the ChBA for the Southern Tigers from Guandong , before he was briefly active in the Philippine Basketball Association for the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. After two missions, the Houston Rockets signed him from the NBA in mid-April for the end of the NBA 2013/14 season . In the Rockets, however, he was only used in one game and released from his contract before the beginning of the following season. According to his own information, Powell is considering ending his career as a player and pursuing a career as a coach.
