Albert "Al" Harrington (born February 17, 1980 in Orange , New Jersey ) is a retired American basketball player who was active from 1998 to 2014 in the NBA . Harrington is the cousin of NBA player Dahntay Jones .

career

Born in Orange , Harrington grew up in Roselle and played basketball at St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth . He was named National Player of the Year by USA Today and was named a 1998 McDonald's High School All-American in his final high school season.

NBA

Indiana Pacers (1998-2004)

At only 18 years old, Harrington was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 25th pick of the 1998 NBA Draft and spent six seasons with the Pacers. In the 2001/02 season he was able to post an average of 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. His season ended in the game against the Boston Celtics when he sustained a knee injury that forced him to miss the final 38 games of the season.

He made his comeback in the 2002/03 season and was the only Pacers player to play all 82 games that year. He averaged 12.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, early in the season. The following season, he increased his averages slightly to 13.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game and finished second in the vote for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award . He was an integral part of the Pacers in their first play-offs participation since 2000.

Atlanta Hawks (2004-2006)

On July 15, 2004, Harrington was joined by the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Stephen Jackson . Harrington eventually became an overnight starter, but the Hawks weren't as successful as the Pacers.

Second time with the Pacers (2006-2007)

On August 22, 2006, John Edwards and a 2007 first round draft pick was traded by the Indiana Pacers to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Harrington being sent back to the Pacers. In the 2006/07 , Harrington wore jersey number # 32 because his first choice # 3 was worn by his teammate Šarūnas Jasikevičius .

Golden State Warriors (2007-2008)

On January 17, 2007, Harrington, along with his teammates Stephen Jackson , Šarūnas Jasikevičius and Josh Powell for Troy Murphy , Mike Dunleavy Jr. , Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod transferred to the Golden State Warriors .

New York Knicks (2008-2010)

On November 21, 2008, Harrington was given to the New York Knicks in exchange for Jamal Crawford . He played the best basketball of his career in his two seasons for the Knicks, although he did not make the play-offs in either year. In 140 games (66 starts), he averaged 19.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 32.7 minutes per game.

Denver Nuggets (2010-2012)

On July 15, 2010, Harrington signed a multi-year contract with the Denver Nuggets . In the 2010–11 season, he averaged 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 22.8 minutes of playing time per game. The Nuggets finish the season 50-32, fifth best team in the Western Conference and second best in the Northwest Division. The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Nuggets in five games in the first round of the 2010 playoffs.

Orlando Magic (2012-2013)

On August 10, 2012, Harrington was transferred to the Orlando Magic through a four-nation trade , with Dwight Howard being sent to the Los Angeles Lakers . He played only 10 games for the Magic in the 2012-13 season and made an average of 5.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 11.7 minutes per game. With the Magic he ended the season with a record of 20-62, the worst record in NBA history. On August 2, 2013, Harrington was fired from the Magic.

Washington Wizards (2013-2014)

On August 14, 2013, Harrington signed with the Washington Wizards . He played 34 games for the Wizards and scored an average of 6.6 points.

Since 2014

He left the Wizards and signed with the Fujian Sturgeons in China . However, left the team just 2 months later and returned to the US.

On March 18, 2015, Harrington announced his retirement from professional sport and took a position as an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets .
