Stephen Jesse Jackson (born April 5, 1978 in Port Arthur , Texas ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2000 to 2014 . In 2003 , Jackson won the NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs .
Player career
Jackson wanted to attend the University of Arizona but was not admitted for academic reasons. He went to community college but did not play college basketball . In 1997, he was selected 43rd in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns . The Suns released him on October 30th. He then played briefly in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for the LaCrosse Bobcats, in the Australian National Basketball League for the Sydney Kings, as well as in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
NBA
In the 2000/01 season , Jackson finally moved to the NBA for the New Jersey Nets . In 77 games he scored an average of 8.2 points and played in the rookie game of the NBA All-Star Weekend .
Prior to the 2001/02 season , Stephen signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs . However, he was plagued by injuries and missed 45 games. It was not until the 2002/03 season that he became an important part of the Spurs. In 80 games he made an average of 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds , in the play-offs even 12.8 points per game. The Spurs won the NBA title that season.
In 2003 he became a free agent and signed with the Atlanta Hawks , for which he was able to book 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 80 games . On March 12, 2004 Jackson was able to achieve his career high of 42 points against the Washington Wizards .
After the 2003/04 season , Jackson was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Al Harrington . He received a 30-game suspension from the NBA for his involvement in the Pacers Pistons brawl ("Malice at the Palace") on November 19, 2004. He also came into conflict with the law in 2006 and was dismissed from the NBA banned for seven games. It was about a fight and gunshots from Jackson's pistol. Whether it was self-defense as Jackson claims is a matter of dispute.
In January 2007 he was handed over by the Indiana Pacers along with Al Harrington , Šarūnas Jasikevičius and Josh Powell to the Golden State Warriors , who received Mike Dunleavy Jr. , Troy Murphy, Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod in return .
In March 2008 he was honored by the NBA for his social commitment with the NBA's Community Assist Award .
On November 16, 2009, the Golden State Warriors gave Jackson and teammate Acie Law in exchange for Raja Bell and Vladimir Radmanović to the Charlotte Bobcats . In the previous off-season , Jackson had asked for a trade.
June 2011 Jackson was re-traded. He switched from the Bobcats to the Milwaukee Bucks . He played there until March 2012 and was then traded again. He returned to his former team, the Golden State Warriors , who then passed him on to the San Antonio Spurs . In return, Richard Jefferson went to Oakland. For the Spurs, Jackson mostly came off the bench and received fewer minutes over the course of the season due to the strong competition in the Texans' squad. In April 2013, Jackson's contract with Spurs was terminated before the start of the play-offs.
In December of the same year he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers , but they released him after 9 games. The Clippers were Jackson's last stint as a professional basketball player.
Others
According to media reports, Jackson was a good friend of the African-American George Floyd , who died of police violence on May 25, 2020 , whose death sparked protests and riots across the country .
