Troy Brandon Murphy (born May 2, 1980 in Morristown , New Jersey ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2001 to 2012 . Before going to the University of Notre Dame and becoming a two-time All-American , he was at the Delbarton School in Morristown for four years.
Career
High school
Murphy grew up in Sparta, New Jersey . He was a three-time all-county and two-time all-state basketball player under coach Dan Whalen for the Delbarton School in Morristown. In his junior year he scored 20.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game and was even able to increase to 23.5 points per game in his sophomore year. In his senior year, he led his team to 20 wins in 26 games while posting 33 points, 14.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. At the end of that season, he was named Morris County Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his team at the Capital Classic in Washington DC.
college
Murphy played basketball for the University of Notre Dame for three seasons and led the team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, in both points and rebounds for all three years. He was a First Team All-American in his junior and sophomore years. In 2001 he was named Big East Conference Player of the Year with Troy Bell, making him one of four players to receive this award twice.
He scored the fifth most points in the university's history and by the time he left university he had the second most blocks, free throws and was sixth in the rebounds category. After the end of his college career, he could look back on an average of 21.4 points and 9.8 rebounds.
Golden State Warriors (2001 to 2007)
Murphy was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 14th pick in the 2001 NBA Draft . After a slow start, he seemed to be finding his way around the NBA field towards the end of his first season. In his second season he was already on the starting line-up of the Warriors and was able to increase his average to 11.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He was one of five players who could achieve an average of a double-double this season . At the Rookie Challenge he was part of the Sophomores team and at the end of the season he finished second in the NBA's Most Improved Player . In the following, his third, season he was only able to play 28 games of his team due to injury.
In the 2004/05 NBA season, Murphy's fourth season in the league, he increased his points average to 15.4 points per game and his rebounds to an average of 10.8 per game. In the following two seasons, his cut fell slightly.
Indiana Pacers (2007 to 2010)
On January 17, 2007 Murphy was given to the Indiana Pacers along with Mike Dunleavy Jr. , Ike Diogu and Ketih McLeod in exchange for Stephen Jackson , Al Harrington , Šarūnas Jasikevičius and Josh Powell . During his time with the Pacers, Murphy improved his three-point throw even further, hitting 45% of his three-pointers in the 2008-09 NBA season. This season his average was 14.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.
New Jersey Nets (2010 to 2011)
On August 11, 2010 Murphy landed through a four-team and five-player swap deal with the New Jersey Nets , for which he played 18 games. On February 23, 2011, he was given together with a second-round draft pick in exchange for Brandan Wright and Dan Gadzuric to the Golden State Warriors , who bought him out of his contract just four days later.
Boston Celtics (2011)
On March 2, 2011 Murphy signed a contract with the Boston Celtics until the end of the 2010/11 season.
Los Angeles Lakers (2011 to 2012)
For the 2011/12 season Murphy moved to the Los Angeles Lakers . There he received a contract until the end of the season. After the Lakers could not advance to the final as hoped, Murphy received no new contract in Los Angeles for the 2012/13 season.
Dallas Mavericks (2012)
After Murphy initially did not find a new club, he remained without a contract until November 2012. Shortly after the start of the season, he finally received an offer from the Dallas Mavericks and signed a contract with the Texan club for a year until 2013. But at the end of November, his contract in Dallas was dissolved again to be able to sign point guard Derek Fisher .
End of career
Murphy then found no employment with another NBA club and ended his NBA career. In his twelve-year career, he scored 10.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
