Jamaal Lee Tinsley (born February 28, 1978 in Brooklyn , New York ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2001 to 2013 .

Childhood and youth

Tinsley grew up in Brooklyn , New York , where he attended his first high school, which he had to leave after a few weeks. His mother then sent him to his sister in Cleveland, where he was shot a few months later in the course of some gang arguments. He then returned to New York and spends most of the time on the city's open air courts and traveled with his AAU team to Brooklyn USA to various tournaments along the east coast. At these tournaments he met Stephon Marbury and Rafer Alston, among others .

college

Tinsley didn't graduate from high school, so he moved to Mount San Jacinto Community College in California . He did not need a degree there. In his second year there, he was voted “State Player of the Year” and then had a few offers to move to real colleges.

He chose Iowa State University . In his last year there, the 2000/2001 season, he was voted Player of the Year in the Big 12 Conference . With his team, however, he was surprisingly eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament against Hampton University .

NBA career

Tinsley was selected in the 2001 NBA Draft in 27th place by the Vancouver Grizzlies , but on the same day first transferred to the Atlanta Hawks and then to the Indiana Pacers . With the Pacers he played in his first two years under Head Coach Isiah Thomas as starting point guard . For his accomplishments in the first NBA year, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . Under the new head coach Rick Carlisle , Tinsley was replaced by Kenny Anderson and Anthony Johnson in the 2003/04 season , but could use an injury break of these two to play again in the first five. With his team he reached the final of the Eastern Conference in 2004. 2004/05 Tinsley had his most successful year and scored 15.4 points, 4.0 rebounds , 6.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game for Indiana .

In the years that followed, Tinsley was plagued by several injuries and ultimately fell out of favor with the Pacers team. In the run-up to the 2008/09 season , Tinsley was informed by the team that he would neither train nor play with the team in the coming season. The NBA Players Union ( NBPA ) sued this practice. In the summer of 2009, Tinsley was finally released from the Pacers.

In November 2009 Tinsley was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies , but his contract was not renewed after the season. In November 2011 he signed a contract in the NBA D-League with the Los Angeles D-Fenders .

In December 2011, Tinsley signed a one-year contract with the Utah Jazz . At the Jazz, Tinsley mostly came as a replacement from the bank. In the summer of 2012, the option to extend the contract by one year was drawn, so that Tinsley remained in the jazz squad for the 2012/13 season .

For the 2013/14 season , Tinsley initially received no new contract. After trunk point guard Trey Burke sustained an injury, the Jazz decided to extend Tinsley's contract. After 8 games for the Jazz, however, Tinsley was surprisingly fired.
