Career

Streetball

Alston grew up in Queens , New York and is still considered one of the best streetball basketball players of all time. His fast moves have earned him the nickname 'Skip to my Lou'.

High school

Alston played under Coach Gregory Adams for St. Jerome School in the Bronx , New York, and under Coach Ron Naclerio for Benjamin Cardozo High School in Queens.

college

Alston spent three seasons in college. 1994–1995 he was at Ventura College and from 1996 to 1998 at Fresno Community College and Fresno State University , both colleges in California .

Milwaukee Bucks (1999-2002)

Rafer Alston was selected in the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and spent his first three seasons with the team. He saw very little playing time and was only used sparsely. In these three years he was only on the field in 114 of 246 possible games and only for just under 10 minutes per game.

Toronto Raptors (2002-2003)

The Bucks decided to let Alston go, and he signed a ten-day contract on January 18, 2003 with the Toronto Raptors for the remainder of the 2002/03 season , where he was eventually used more. He was on the field for just over 20 minutes per game and averaged 7.8 points, 4.1 assists and 0.8 steals.

Miami Heat (2003-2004)

Despite his passable performance, the Raptors decided not to sign the young point guard again. As a free agent, Alston then signed a one-year contract with the Miami Heat . Over the course of the season, he earned more and more minutes and ultimately even started in 28 of the 82 games in which he took part for the Heat this season. In his 31.5 minutes, which he stood on average per game on the field, Alston achieved career highs of 10.2 points, 4.5 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals. He was already in the play-offs in his first two years in the NBA , but then hardly got any playing time. It was only this season that he was able to gain his first real experience in the playoffs. In the 13 playoff games in 2004 in which he was used, he came to an average of 7 points per game.

Toronto Raptors (2004-2005)

After his breakthrough with the Heat but his contract expired, Alston decided to try again at Toronto. He was put on the starting grid and scored 14.2 points and 6.4 assists per game, but often offended his coach about his attitude. This season, the entry into the NBA playoffs was missed.

Houston Rockets (2005-2009)

On October 4, 2005, Alston was given in exchange for Mike James to the Houston Rockets , who put him as a build-up player in the starting line-up of their team around Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady . In his three seasons, Alston averaged about 13 points, 6 assists and 1.5 steals per game. In the 2006/07 season, Alston was the player with the fourth most converted three-point throws in the NBA. For the past two years, the Rockets have made it to the NBA playoffs but never got past the first round.

Orlando Magic (2009)

On February 19, 2009, Alston was traded to the Orlando Magic to replace the injured Jameer Nelson in the last 28 regular season games on the grid. The Rockets wanted to make room for the younger Kyle Lowry at the same time and give Alston the opportunity to play for a championship contender. The Magic made it to the NBA playoffs, where they beat the Philadelphia 76ers , the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers . Alston was in the NBA final series for the first time in his career, but the Los Angeles Lakers proved too strong for the Magic.

New Jersey Nets (2009-2010)

On June 25, 2009, Alston was sent to the New Jersey Nets along with Tony Battie and Courtney Lee in exchange for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson . The Nets, who had split from Jason Kidd the year before and were looking for young players to rebuild their team, fired Alston on January 5, 2010 to give him the chance to get a contract with a team sign that has a chance of winning the NBA championship.

Miami Heat (2010)

Two days later, on January 7, 2010, the Miami Heat signed Alston for the second time. Since Alston was known to scandalize his coaches and his attitude towards training sessions in general was rather questionable, he was suspended indefinitely on March 6, 2010 after missing a training session and a game in Miami after 25 games. 7 days later he was suspended for the remainder of the season.

Zhejiang Guangsha (2011)

Alston then decided to try the CBA . He was signed by the Zhejiang Guangsha basketball team for the 2010/11 CBA season. However, he never played a game for Guangsha.

Los Angeles D-Fenders (2012)

His last professional station were the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the NBA Development League D-League . He played 4 games for the D-Fenders.

Scouting for the Timberwolves (since 2017)

The former NBA professional has been a scout for the Timberwolves since October 2017.
