Clarence "Sonny" Weems (born July 8, 1986 in West Memphis , Arkansas ) is an American basketball player who was last under contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA . Weems began his professional career in the most highly endowed US professional league, the NBA, but was repeatedly posted to the Colorado 14ers farm team during his first season by the Denver Nuggets . With the 14ers he won the championship in the NBA Development League in 2009 , where he was the top scorer of his team in each of the finals . After two seasons with the Canadian NBA club Toronto Raptors, Weems moved to Europe in 2011. In the 2012/13 to 2014/15 season, Weems was under contract with the dominant Russian series champion ZSKA from Moscow . He returned to the NBA in the summer of 2015 and signed with the Phoenix Suns .

College (2004 to 2008)

For his studies Weems moved in 2004 in his native US state to the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith , for whose university team Lions he was active in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association and with which he won the national championship of this league in 2006. He then moved to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville , for whose college team Razorbacks he was active in the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA Division I. The Razorbacks qualified twice for the national finals , in which, however, they were eliminated early in the first and second round.

NBA (2008 to 2011)

In the 2008 NBA draft selected by the Chicago Bulls, Weems was two days later already, among others, in exchange for Ömer Aşık passed on to the Denver Nuggets. This used him after groin problems at the beginning of his first NBA season only sporadically, so that he only played twelve games in total. Instead, he was repeatedly posted to the D-League for the Colorado 14ers farm team. In the team with the later basketball Bundesliga professionals Eddie Gill and Joe Dabbert , Weems reached the final games of the league with the 14ers, where they prevailed in two games against the Utah Flash in the " best of three " series and the Championship won in 2009. Weems was his team's top scorer in both games. After the championship, Weems was exchanged via the Milwaukee Bucks for the Canadian NBA club Toronto Raptors. Weems, known for his spectacular style of play thanks to his good athleticism, was used significantly more in the Raptors than in the Nuggets and was at times one of the team's “ starting five ”.

Europe (2011 to 2015)

During the lockout of the NBA in 2011, Weems joined the Lithuanian club Žalgiris Kaunas, which he did not leave again after the lockout ended in December 2011. Against the eternal rival Lietuvos rytas Vilnius , both the national championship and the title in the Baltic Basketball League were defended. In the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 they reached the second group stage of the 16 best teams, in which, however, they remained without a win in six games. For the 2012/13 season, Weems moved to the Russian series champion ZSKA Moscow, who surprisingly lost the Euroleague final.

Return to the NBA (2015 to 2016)

On July 17, Weems signed a two-year contract with the Phoenix Suns .
