Career

Rodríguez at Real Madrid in May 2011

The 1.91 meter tall Rodríguez began his career in the team of his school Colegio La Salle San Ildefonso in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . From there he moved to the clubs Tenerife CB and from 2000 to Siglo XXI, a basketball academy in Getxo . In 2003, CB Estudiantes signed the talented point guard and put him on the club's B team. He made his debut in the senior squad on June 13, 2004 in a playoff game for the Spanish championship against FC Barcelona . Rodríguez quickly rose to one of the greatest hopes of Spanish basketball and was chosen in the 2004/05 season to discover the season of the ACB league .

After three years with the Madrilenians he was selected in the NBA Draft 2006 in the 27th place of the first round by the Phoenix Suns and transferred to the Portland Trail Blazers , for which he played three years. In summer 2009 Rodríguez moved to the Sacramento Kings , but in February 2010 the Kings transferred him to the New York Knicks . In the North American professional league, however, Rodríguez was never able to prevail and mostly came from the bank. His best time was at the Knicks, where he averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists per game in 19.7 minutes .

In the summer of 2010 he went back to his homeland, to Real Madrid , where he signed a contract that ran until 2013. After a first year without a title, Rodríguez was able to win the trophy with his team in 2011/12 . At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he won the Spanish Supercup , he also reached the final of the Euroleague with Real Madrid and ended the year with a victory in the championship . He himself was voted the best point guard in the league's all-tournament team because of his strong lines .

In 2016, the Spaniard returned to the NBA and played for the Philadelphia 76ers for a year . But already after the 2016/17 season , Rodríguez left the league and signed a contract with PBK CSKA Moscow . According to basketball experts, Rodríguez's basketball qualities are better demonstrated in less athletic basketball in Europe, which is why he celebrated his successes in Europe.

In summer 2019 he moved to the Italian record champions Olimpia Milano .

National team

Rodríguez celebrated his first successes for the Spanish national team as a youngster. In 2004 he won the U18 European Championship with a 89:71 final against Turkey. In the tournament he averaged 19 points and distributed 8.5 assists per game and was voted MVP for his achievements .

On August 28, 2005, the then almost 19-year-old made his senior national team debut against France . Shortly thereafter, he was part of the squad at the European Championship , but failed here in the game for third place to France. His greatest success with the selection of Spain came at the 2006 World Basketball Championship in Japan , where he won the gold medal. At the 2007 European Championships in their own country, Rodríguez and his team failed in the final against Russia and took silver.
