Benicàssim ( Valencian ; Spanish : Benicasim ) is a city on the Costa del Azahar in the province of Castelló in the Valencian Community ( Comunitat Valenciana ), Spain . The city borders directly to the north on Castellón de la Plana . Due to its function as a tourist destination, the population increases to up to 40,000 during the season.
history
During the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939, the German-Jewish doctor Günter Bodek, who fled to Spain from persecution by the Nazis, headed the hospital center as chief doctor on the part of the Republicans.
In late summer 1937, the editor of the New Theater magazine Herbert Kline , the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson and the cameraman Jacques Lemare visited the hospital center to make a documentary about the American Medical Bureau during the Spanish Civil War. They also shot in the International Brigades Hospital (Villa Paz) in Saelices , near the Spanish capital.
