Ramazan "Rambo" Özcan [ ˈøzdʒɑn ] (born June 28, 1984 in Hohenems ) is a former Austrian football player . He was last four years under contract as a goalkeeper with the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

Since July 1, 2020, he has been taking on goalkeeping training for youth at Bayer 04.

Club career

Youth and advancement to a professional

Ramazan Özcan began his football career at FC Götzis and was selected for the Bundesnachwuchszentrum (BNZ) Vorarlberg when he was 14. In 2003 he moved to SC Austria Lustenau in the second-class first division . In his first season as a regular goalkeeper, as runner-up behind FC Wacker Tirol , his team just missed promotion to the Bundesliga . In 2006, the now multiple junior team player was signed for the second team of FC Red Bull Salzburg . In the 2006/07 season he was promoted from the Regionalliga West to the First League with Red Bulls Amateurs .

In the Bundesliga, Özcan only played two insignificant games for the first team of FC Red Bull Salzburg, but could not convince in the two defeats. On May 9, 2007 he made his debut in a 3-2 defeat at home against ASKÖ Pasching .

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

In January 2008, Özcan was until the end of the 2007/08 season from German second division side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim loaned and later a permanent obligation. After the previous goalkeeper Daniel Haas was injured on the 17th matchday, Özcan played all second division games for Hoffenheim in the second half of the season. With the Hoffenheim team, where he played with compatriot Andreas Ibertsberger , he and the team were promoted to the Bundesliga .

After Özcan sustained a capsule injury in his knee joint , coach Ralf Rangnick relegated him to the bench after his recovery. From January 1, 2010 to the end of the 2009/10 season, Özcan was signed on loan by Turkish first division club Beşiktaş Istanbul . There he was a replacement for the two injured keepers Rüştü Reçber and Hakan Arıkan .

FC Ingolstadt 04

During the summer break of 2011, Özcan moved to FC Ingolstadt 04 . There he signed a contract dated June 30, 2013. He was initially only scheduled as the second goalkeeper behind Sascha Kirschstein ; However, this lost his regular seat and coach Benno Möhlmann put Özcan on October 1, 2011 for the first time. After initial uncertainties, he stabilized his performance and was regularly in goal. During the 2015/16 winter break, Özcan extended his contract until 2019.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

For the season 2016/17 Özcan Ingolstadt left early and signed a three-year contract with Bundesliga rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He should act there as a support behind the first goalkeeper Bernd Leno .

Özcan made his competitive debut on October 25, 2016 in the second round of the DFB Cup at Sportfreunde Lotte , in which he had to concede two goals until the end of extra time. In the final penalty shootout, he fended off two attempts by the sports fans, but was eliminated with the team. He played in the Champions League for the first time on December 7 , when he represented Leno in the final game of the group stage. He did not concede in the home game against AS Monaco , the team won the game 3-0. Even after Leno's departure in mid-2018 and the associated commitment of Lukáš Hrádecký as the new regular goalkeeper, Özcan took on the role of the club's first substitute goalkeeper. Since Hrádecký sustained an injury while preparing for the 2018/19 season , Özcan played in the first three competitive games (once in the DFB Cup, twice in the Bundesliga). Also in the Europa League he was used after the early qualification for the round of 32 after four games in the fifth game of the group stage. At the end of March 2019, Özcan's contract, which was originally due to expire in June 2019, was extended by one season.

At the end of the 2019/20 season, Özcan ended his active career at the age of 36 and after eight games he had played for Leverkusen. For the postponed, remaining Europa League season , in which the club was still participating, Özcan received an extension of his player's contract until August 21, 2020 in order to continue to be available as the first substitute goalkeeper.

National team career

Özcan was after the injury-or rather sick leave by Helge Payer and Christian Gratzei at short notice as the third goalkeeper in the squad for the Euro 2008 called, but did not play. He made his debut for the national team on August 20, 2008 in a 2-2 test international match against Italy in Nice , in which he caused an own goal. Also because of a capsule injury, Özcan was no longer part of the Austrian national team for almost three years after the 2-0 defeat on September 10, 2008 in the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania in Kaunas .

On March 14, 2013 he was nominated for the World Cup qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Ireland . Since then he has been part of the squad and made his comeback in the national team on May 30, 2014 in the 1-1 test international match against Iceland in Innsbruck , when he came on for Heinz Lindner at the beginning of the second half . He was included in the Austrian squad for the 2016 European Championship in France . He was the second goalkeeper behind Robert Almer without any use. Austria finished last in its group with only one point and was eliminated from the tournament after the preliminary round.

In March 2017, Özcan announced that he would not continue his career as a national player.

After the active career

Özcan has been the goalkeeping coach at Bayer 04 Leverkusen since July 1, 2020, from the Bambinis to the club's C youth. He received a contract with a term until mid-2022.
