Christian Gratzei (born September 19, 1981 in Leoben ) is a former Austrian soccer goalkeeper .
Career
Gratzei began his active career as a football player in 1987, at the age of six, with DSV Leoben . Until 1998 he went through all youth teams of the Donawitzer and was from 1998 in the squad of the professional team in the second-rate first division . In 2001 Gratzei moved to the amateur team of the Grazer AK . In 2002 Franco Foda brought him to the amateurs of SK Sturm Graz and when Foda became the coach of the fighting team in the same year, Gratzei also got his chance to train in the first team. On March 8, 2003 Gratzei made his debut in the top division of Austrian football when he was in the goal of the Grazer in the game against SW Bregenz . After more than half a year of injury-related break, he slowly felt his way back to the top, but was unable to permanently consolidate his position due to a few mistakes. In the 2005/06 season Gratzei was not used.
Since February 2007 he has been the regular goalkeeper of SK Sturm again. Furthermore, Gratzei was part of the extended Austrian squad at the European Football Championship in 2008 , but when the third goalkeeper Helge Payer also failed, he had to let Ramazan Özcan go first because he himself also failed due to an injury to his knee. In autumn 2009 Gratzei was Austria's second goalkeeper behind Helge Payer and made his national team debut on October 14 in the 3-1 defeat by France at the Stade de France , when he replaced Payer in the second half.
On February 1, 2008 Gratzei was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Austrian national team. In April 2008, the club presidents, coaches and managers of the Bundesliga clubs named Gratzei goalkeeper for the 2007/08 season . In the 2010/11 season Christian Gratzei was also elected goalkeeper of the season and was also Austrian champion with Sturm Graz.
On January 28, 2011, Gratzei extended his expiring contract with Sturm Graz by four years until the end of the 2014/15 season.
He ended his career after the 2017/18 season. In 2019 he took over the post of goalkeeper coach at Wolfsberger AC .
