Since the 2005 season Renan was part of the professional squad of Internacional Porto Alegre . That same season, on April 3, he made his debut for the club in a 1-0 win over EC Juventude . There he could then fight for a regular place. At the end of the year the state championship of Rio Grande do Sul was won. It was Renan's first title with the red and whites . In 2008 the team repeated this triumph. With the 2005 victory, the team qualified for the Copa Libertadores , the South American Champions League. Internacional made it to the final, where they met Sao Paulo FC . The 2-1 first leg win started the cup success after the second leg ended in a 2-2 draw. It was the first Copa Libertadores win for the SCI . This achievement was crowned again by winning the FIFA Club World Cup in the same year. In the final they defeated FC Barcelona 1-0.

In August 2008 it was announced that Renan would move to Valencia CF in Spain for the coming season . The Los Ches paid a fee of four million € for the goalkeeper. Renan received a four-year contract. In Valencia he was supposed to compete with Timo Hildebrand for the space between the posts. Although he only trained with the team for three days after the Olympics , he was preferred to his rival and pushed Hildebrand into the stands. He therefore decided to leave the club during the winter break. Vicente Guaita moved up as number 2 behind Renan . On January 18, 2009, he tore a hamstring in his left thigh in the point game against Athletic Bilbao , which he was out for several weeks. Valencia then signed César Sánchez as a replacement. After Renan recovered, he couldn't get past César and found himself on the bench. When the FC officials brought in Miguel Ángel Moyá Rumbo from RCD Mallorca in the summer of 2009 , it was decided to loan Renan to the newly promoted Deportivo Xerez . There he should find his old strength and get match practice.

For the 2010/11 season Renan was loaned to his home club Internacional Porto Alegre . With these he played shortly afterwards, in August, in the final of the Copa Libertadores 2010 . Renan was used by coach Celso Roth in the 2-1 first leg win and 3-2 return leg success.

National team

For the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Renan was appointed for the U23 selection of Brazil by selection coach Carlos Dunga . There he won the bronze medal.
