Lars Unnerstall (born July 20, 1990 in Ibbenbüren ) is a German football goalkeeper . He is under contract with PSV Eindhoven .

Life

youth

Lars Unnerstall started playing soccer at SV Uffeln at the age of three and moved to the youth department of Prussia Münster in 2005 via the intermediate station Grün-Weiß Steinbeck . Unnerstall made his goalkeeping debut late in the C-youth because a number one was missing and the biggest had to go into goal. After three years in Münster, he joined FC Schalke 04 , where he played one season for the U-19 team and was used in the second team from 2009.

Rise to the pros

For the 2011/12 season , coach Ralf Rangnick named Lars Unnerstall the new number 2 behind regular goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann . Then Unnerstall made his debut in the professional team on July 31, 2011 in the first round of the DFB Cup against FC Teningen . At the beginning of October 2011, Unnerstall's contract, which ran until June 2012, was prematurely extended by one year. On October 15, 2011 (9th matchday) he made his professional debut as a substitute in the 2-1 home defeat against 1. FC Kaiserslautern after Fährmann was sent off in the 28th minute of the game. It turned out that Fährmann had torn a cruciate ligament in the same game and was out for the rest of the season.

Unnerstall played his first full-time Bundesliga game on the following match day in a 1-0 away win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Despite the commitment of the experienced Timo Hildebrand as a reaction to the ferryman's injury, Unnerstall prevailed as number 1. On August 3, 2012, Unnerstall's contract was again prematurely extended for three more years to June 30, 2015. However, he lost his regular place for a short time as a result of an injury break, so that Hildebrand took his place between the posts. Lars Unnerstall only returned to goal after Hildebrand was injured again. Although Hildebrand had recovered, Unnerstall stood in goal on October 21, 2012 at the prestigious Revierderby against BVB 09 in Dortmund and was able to win it. Of all the goalkeepers deployed (Fährmann, Unnerstall, Hildebrand and Mathias Schober ), Unnerstall played the most games.

Loan to Switzerland and move to Fortuna Düsseldorf

For the 2012/13 season, however, Unnerstall was declared number 2 behind Hildebrand. Hildebrand injured himself shortly after the first matchday, so that Unnerstall returned to goal. He initially continued to play despite Hildebrand's recovery. In the course of the first half of the season he ran into several uncertainties, which led to criticism and sometimes whistles during Schalke's home games. He was also accused of technical and tactical defects. Finally, after 13 games, he was taken out of the gate by coach Huub Stevens and replaced again by Hildebrand. Due to a knee operation in the second half of the season he fell out for a long time and then slipped to the position of third goalkeeper behind Hildebrand and Fährmann.

On January 24, 2014, Unnerstall moved to the Swiss Super League for FC Aarau on loan until the end of the season . In a short time he became the darling of the public in Aarau and convinced with good performances. In the end, he made 16 appearances in the top Swiss league and managed to stay in the league as a table ninth with the Aargauer.

Because Ralf Fährmann was in the meantime as the new and old goalkeeper and Fabian Giefer's move from the German second division Fortuna Düsseldorf to FC Schalke 04 was certain, Unnerstall went to Fortuna from Düsseldorf in return. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the terms of the transfer. On October 25, 2014, he made his debut with the professional Fortuna team in the 1-1 away game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. In his first season he only made ten appearances and finished tenth in the table with Fortuna. The following seasons, the Düsseldorf club fought against relegation and finished 14th and eleventh in the table. Unnerstall was not used here.

Change to the Eredivisie

In the summer of 2017, Unnerstall moved to the Dutch first division promoted VVV-Venlo and signed a one-year contract. In his first season he was used in 32 games and ended the season with the team in 15th place in the table.

For the 2018/19 season he signed a three-year contract with PSV Eindhoven , where he continued to play for VVV-Venlo on loan for another year. In his last game of the season for VVV Venlo, Unnerstall injured his knee so that he had to be replaced after just 20 minutes. VVV Venlo finished the season in 12th place, one of the best results in the club's history. Unnerstall contributed significantly to this. During the two seasons for VVV Venlo, Unnerstall became an absolute darling of the public.

For the 2019/2020 season, Unnerstall finally joined PSV from Eindhoven, but missed a large part of the preparation due to his knee injury. It was therefore initially only used in the 2nd team. He made his competitive debut for PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie on November 10, 2019 in the 2-1 defeat against Willem II in Tilburg. PSV coach Mark van Bommel surprisingly preferred him to Dutch goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet .

Junior national team

Unnerstall played his first international junior match for the German U-20 national team on October 7, 2010 , when he came on as a substitute for Niclas Heimann in the 2-0 home win over the Swiss team in the second half . On August 31, 2011, he was nominated for the U-21 national team , but was not used.

Others

With a height of 198 cm and a body weight of around 100 kg, he surpassed all other goalkeepers in the first and second Bundesliga in 2014.
