Career

society

Gakpo, who was born in Eindhoven , comes from Togo and Ghana through his parents . In 2007 he moved to the youth department of PSV Eindhoven , where he then went through all of the junior teams of the honorary division . For the 2016/17 season he was in the reserve team Jong PSV for the first time , but was mainly active in the U19 team. He made his debut in the second highest Dutch league on November 4, 2016 (13th matchday) in the 0-1 away defeat against Helmond Sport . In the rest of the season he came only to one more use for Jong PSV. After causing a sensation in the U19 Eredivisie with seven goals and five assists in 13 league games the next season, he was finally promoted to the reserve at the turn of the year. In his second season appearance in the second-rate Jupiler League, on January 19, 2017 (21st matchday) in a 3-2 away win against BV De Graafschap , he put together a brace and prepared the third goal for his team. Even at a higher level, he was able to score seven goals in this 2017/18 season , which he achieved in 12 league games.

In the next season 2018/19 Gakpo was able to further improve its performance. His strong performances were also noticed by the first team coach, Mark van Bommel . This nominated him several times for the matchday squad in the first half of the season. For the time being, however, there was no first deployment in the Eredivisie. But he made his debut in the 4-0 away win against Excelsior Maassluis in the KNVB Cup on September 26, where he also scored one goal. In the near future, however, he was only able to collect operating time in the league. In the 5-1 home win against the Go Ahead Eagles on December 3, 2018, he marked the first hat trick of his professional career. After he scored a goal and an assist in the 5-2 home win against Almere City on December 21, he made his debut in the Eredivisie just one day later. In the 3-1 home win against AZ Alkmaar , he came on for Steven Bergwijn in the closing stages . He scored nine goals in ten league games for Jong PSV by the end of the year and was then a regular member of the first team. On February 3, 2019, he scored in his second appearance in the 5-0 home win against Fortuna Sittard for the first time in the league and also prepared another goal. By the end of the season he was used in 14 other league games, but without being able to record another goal. In the following season 2019/20 he made his breakthrough in the Eredivisie and scored seven goals and as many assists in 25 league games.
