The Almere City FC is a football club from the Dutch Almere , which was founded in 1997 under the name of FC Omniworld and is represented in professional football since of 2005.

history

In the mid-1990s, the city of Almere came up with a plan to promote attractive sports in the city. In addition to sports such as volleyball and basketball , they wanted to establish a professional football club in the city. This plan was drawn up in such a way that around 2015, around 250,000 inhabitants were forecast for Almere. The idea was that a big city needs large-scale facilities; not only in the health and cultural sectors, but also in sport.

The urban development organization Almada was selected in autumn 1996 to work out and substantiate the sporting ambitions together with the city. A year later, Omniworld, a sports club was founded that was to offer many sports under one roof. In order to be more involved in the planning, the city of Almere itself founded the Naamloze Vennootschap Sportcomplex Almere , which was intended to develop the sports grounds. After the city council elections in 2002, in which the Leefbaar Almere party , which is against professional football in Almere, won, Almere distanced itself from the plans. These could no longer be realized with taxpayers' money.

In 2004, FC Omniworld failed to meet the licensing requirements for Dutch professional football. The financial resources to keep playing came from the private sector. At the beginning of 2005, Omniworld met an important point in the license agreement. The building permit for the stadium has been granted.

For the 2010/11 season, the club name was changed to Almere City FC . The club also partnered with Ajax Amsterdam at the same time , allowing some Ajax players to play on loan to Almere City each season.

Career from the 2005/06 season

In August 2005, the Mitsubishi Forklift Stadium (today: Yanmar Stadium ) was opened in the Fanny Blankers Koen Sports Park and now has 4,501 seats. The parking lot was enlarged and the professional department got its own building. Since August 2005, FC Omniworld took part in the second-rate Jupiler League . In the 2008/09 season they finished last in the table. After the KNVB had decided during the season that a relegation regulation for the Eerste Divisie should only be introduced in the 2009/10 season, the club continued to play in this league. At the end of the 2010/11 season, Almere City FC should actually have made it to the top class as bottom of the table , but was also allowed to participate in the 2011/12 season in the second division, as RBC Roosendaal had withdrawn from professional business.
