Club career

youth

Djourou was born in Ivory Coast. At the age of 17 months, he was adopted by Djourou's father's Swiss partner and grew up near Geneva . His first club was FC Champel , where he stayed briefly; at the age of eight he went to Étoile Carouge . Here he first played as a striker, but when he was 13 he was pulled into defensive midfield . While still a youngster, he moved to Arsenal in July 2003 .

professional

Djourou in England

He made his debut for the professional Arsenal team on October 27, 2004 in the League Cup in a 2-1 win over Manchester City , when he came on in the 89th minute for Jermaine Pennant . As a result, he was used two more times in the League Cup and was eliminated with Arsenal in the quarter-finals against Manchester United . He made his Premier League debut the following season on January 14, 2006 in a 7-0 win over Middlesbrough FC . Then he came to six more appearances in the league, bringing it to a total of twelve season appearances, although he was not involved in Arsenal's entry into the Champions League final . To his first Champions League appearances he came against Dinamo Zagreb in the CL qualification of the next season. He won this with Arsenal and thus came to further appearances in the Champions League.

Despite these missions and 21 league games, he did not make the final breakthrough. Therefore he was loaned to Birmingham City for the first half of the 2007/08 season. In the Premier League promoted Djourou was part of the team from the start. Before returning to Arsenal, he played 13 games for Birmingham during the winter break.

After returning to Arsenal, he made two appearances in the second half of the season. In the next season he was a regular member of the squad again and made a total of 29 missions across all competitions. He suffered a knee injury in the game against Wigan Athletic on April 11, 2009 and underwent surgery in September 2009 that forced him to take an eight-month hiatus. His comeback and his only game in the 2009/10 season he played on May 9, 2010 at the season finale against Fulham .

In the 2010/11 season he gradually became a regular player, also due to the injury of Thomas Vermaelen . Together with Laurent Koscielny Djourou formed mostly the central defense and scored his first goal in the Premier League on February 5, 2011 against Newcastle United . He also reached the league cup final with Arsenal and lost 2-1 to Birmingham City, his former club. In the next season he played 14 times from the start. In the Champions League group stage he only made sporadic appearances and was unable to secure a permanent place in the starting line-up.

Change to the Bundesliga

In the winter break of 2012/13 he was loaned to Bundesliga club Hannover 96 until the end of the season. In the second half of the season opener in the away game against FC Schalke 04 Djourou was in the starting line-up and played the full distance in the 4-5 defeat. He played 14 out of 17 possible games.

For the 2013/14 season he was loaned to Hamburger SV . The association also secured a purchase option. This had to be used by Djourou after the 20th league mission.

In the 2014/15 season Djourou was a regular player and missed only two league games. For the 2015/16 season he took over the captaincy from Rafael van der Vaart , who moved to Betis Sevilla . Djourou had already represented van der Vaart several times in the preseason. In the home win against VfB Stuttgart on the second match day of the 2015/16 season, Djourou scored his first Bundesliga goal to make it 3-2 in the 89th minute. In November 2016, coach Markus Gisdol appointed Djourou's teammate Gōtoku Sakai as the new team captain. He publicly criticized Gisdol for this in an interview with the Aargauer Zeitung . In the second half of the season he also lost his regular place to the newcomers Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Mergim Mavraj , who from then on represented the regular central defense. At the beginning of May 2017 Djourou was deleted from the first team's squad together with Nabil Bahoui and Ashton Götz . The reasons given by coach Markus Gisdol were to want to reduce the training squad for the last three match days in order to keep the league. The players were offered the opportunity to train with the second team or a private coach. Djourou then went into training for the second team until the end of the season and then left the club when his contract expired.

Via Turkey to Italy

In the 2017/18 season he played for the Turkish first division club Antalyaspor . Due to a lack of salary payments, Djourou dissolved his contract with the Turks after a year.

For the 2018/19 season Djourou joined the Italian first division club SPAL Ferrara . After only five games in his first half with the Italians, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement. It wasn't until the second half of 2020 that he found a new employer in FC Sion . Djourou signed a contract with the Super League team until the end of the 2019/20 season . In mid-March 2020, he was released again because of the corona crisis. Johan Djourou has been playing for Neuchâtel Xamax since May 29, 2020, where he signed a contract until the end of the 2019/2020 season.

National team

Djourou played a total of 27 international junior matches from the U-16 to the U-21 for Switzerland and scored two goals.

Djourou received for the friendly against Scotland his first squad for the senior team in Switzerland. The first squad was followed by the first international match, which he played in Glasgow on March 1, 2006 at the age of 19 . He played at times with his then teammate from Arsenal FC Philippe Senderos in the Swiss central defense.

He was part of the Swiss national team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and was used in three of the four Swiss World Cup games. As part of the “ Swiss Sports Awards ”, he was voted “Newcomer of the Year”. At the home European championship in 2008 he was again in the Swiss national team . After suffering a knee injury in April 2009, he made his comeback for the national team on November 17, 2010 in a friendly against Ukraine . Switzerland was unable to qualify for the 2012 European Football Championship after the team with Djourou delivered a long-distance duel with Montenegro for second place over long periods of qualification , which entitles them to participate in the play-offs, and in the penultimate game with 0: 2 against Wales . Because Montenegro scored 2-2 against leaders England a few hours later , Switzerland were eliminated.

Djourou was able to qualify for the 2014 World Cup with Switzerland after winning the group in qualifying . On May 13, 2014 Djourou was nominated by Ottmar Hitzfeld in the World Cup squad .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swiss squad. He was part of the regular eleven and played in all four of the team's games for the full season including extra time until he was eliminated in the round of 16.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Swiss squad . He came to a mission and was eliminated with the team in the round of 16.
