Naldo (born September 10, 1982 in Londrina ; real life Ronaldo Aparecido Rodrigues ) is a Brazilian soccer player . He spent 13 ½ years with Werder Bremen , VfL Wolfsburg and FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga and has been German since 2014 . Typical of the goal- scoring central defender are his hard-shot free kicks . Most recently he was under contract with AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1 .

Club career

Beginnings in Brazil

In his youth he played for the RS Futebol Clube from Alvorada , a Brazilian soccer club that also operates a training and player agency, before joining the Brazilian first division club Esporte Clube Juventude from January 2004 .

Werder Bremen

Naldo at Werder Bremen (2009)

After Naldo was noticed in South America as a talented central defender in the Brazilian league, Werder Bremen signed him in 2005 as the successor to Valérien Ismaël, who had switched to Bayern Munich . At Werder, Naldo was given the number 4 on his back and was immediately a regular. In his first Bundesliga season he was in the starting line-up 32 times. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on November 19, 2005 against VfL Wolfsburg . In the Champions League , the Brazilian scored for the first time on October 18, 2006 with a free kick against the Bulgarian club Levski Sofia . In the 2006/07 season he secured the Bremen championship with his goal to make it 2-1 in the game against VfL Wolfsburg.

In April 2010, Naldo retired in the match against Wolfsburg in a challenge with Grafite a bone edema in his right knee. Nevertheless, he played the remaining games of the season with pain killers . However , he could no longer participate in the preparation for the 2010/11 season . Therapy was considered difficult because the injury is rare and the exact cause was unknown. Naldo was initially treated conservatively in Germany by Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt , Ulrich Boenisch and Werder Bremen's team doctor Götz Dimanski . Against the advice of the German doctors and the Werder management, Naldo finally flew to Brazil and was examined there by José Luiz Runco , the doctor of the Brazilian national team . On his advice, Naldo's knee was operated on a few days later, in which the cartilage was deliberately damaged. Doctors predicted that it would take Naldo at least nine months to recover. It was also feared that the cartilage damage could later lead to further knee problems.

On September 10, 2011 (5th matchday) he came on for the first time in 15 months in a competitive game in a 2-0 home win against Hamburger SV when he came on for Claudio Pizarro in the 86th minute . Interrupted by a break caused by problems with his left knee, Naldo was again the team's top performer.

During his entire time at Werder Bremen, Naldo was considered a high performer and public favorite. His contract with Werder Bremen ran until June 30, 2013.

VfL Wolfsburg

For the 2012/13 season , Naldo moved to league rivals VfL Wolfsburg . The clubs did not provide any information about the transfer fee. Prior to the medical check, there were doubts as to whether his knee injury could lead to long-term follow-up problems. In his first competitive game for Wolfsburg, he was in the first round of the German Cup against FC Schoenberg 95 (5: 0) an assist of . In the league, Naldo was a regular at the Lower Saxony and was on the field in all 17 games of the first half of the season. He scored his first league goal for VfL Wolfsburg on November 18, 2012 in the game against 1899 Hoffenheim . Naldo missed the start of the second half of the season due to a yellow card suspension and two more games of the second half due to a muscle injury. In the DFB Cup they were eliminated in the semifinals against Bayern Munich. Naldo played 31 league games and scored six strong goals.

Also in the 2013/14 season , Naldo acted as a regular player in the central defense of Wolfsburg. He only missed a league game due to a yellow card suspension. In 33 games he scored three goals and prepared two more. Thanks also to Naldo, they qualified for the UEFA Europa League . In the DFB Cup they were eliminated again in the semi-finals, this time against Borussia Dortmund . In this competition, he scored a goal and prepared one.

The 2014/15 season should be Naldo's strongest season in the Vfl Wolfsburg jersey. As a central defender, he scored seven goals and prepared two more goals in just 32 games. VfL Wolfsburg qualified for the Champions League and won the DFB Cup in the final against Borussia Dortmund. In the 3-1 win in the final, Naldo prepared a goal. In the Europa League , Lower Saxony made it to the quarter-finals, in which they had to admit defeat to SSC Napoli . Naldo played eleven games in this competition, scoring one goal and preparing two more goals.

Although they won the DFL Supercup against Bayern, the 2015/16 season should be Naldo's weakest season as a Wolfsburg. Among other things, one could not replace the top performer Kevin De Bruyne . In 29 games, Naldo remained goalless for the first time and VfL missed the qualification for an international competition. In the cup they were eliminated in the second main round against Bayern Munich. The Champions League ended in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid , although they had won the first leg 2-0. Previously, Naldo had been the decisive man in the last group game against Manchester United ; in the 3-2 win he scored two goals - it was his only competitive game goals this season.

FC Schalke 04

After his contract with VfL Wolfsburg expired at the end of the 2015/16 season , FC Schalke 04 signed him until June 30, 2018. With Schalke, he got the shirt with the number 29 on his back. He immediately became a regular player in central defense, but could not prevent Schalke's worst start to the season with five defeats in a row. On the 10th matchday of the Bundesliga, he gave his first assist in the game against his ex-club Werder Bremen. On the 14th matchday he was sent off the field after just four minutes in the game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and missed the following two games due to a suspension. On February 4, 2017, he scored his first league goal for Schalke 04 with a free kick in the league game against Bayern Munich. The game ended 1: 1. Just four days later he met again in the DFB Cup game against SV Sandhausen . At the end of February 2017, Naldo suffered a severe partial torn muscle and thus missed the eighth and quarter-finals of Schalke's Europa League and the quarter-finals in the DFB Cup. Schalke was eliminated in both competitions. It wasn't until the last matchday of the Bundesliga that he celebrated his comeback in a 1-1 draw against FC Ingolstadt 04 .

After Benedikt Höwedes left for Juventus Turin for the 2017/18 season , Naldo became the new defense chief of the Schalke back team. The new coach Domenico Tedesco built on three central defenders, so that in addition to the seeded Naldo Thilo Kehrer , Matija Nastasić or Benjamin Stambouli acted. The DFB Cup game against BFC Dynamo missed Naldo because of a sprain. In the Bundesliga he played over 90 minutes in all 17 first round games. He scored five goals, including two last-minute equalizer against Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt . At the end of the season he was runner-up with FC Schalke 04.

In the first half of the 2018/19 season , Naldo lost his regular place. Coach Tedesco varied between two and three central defenders during the weak Schalke preliminary round, which ended with 18 points in 13th place in the table. While in a back four mostly Nastasić (13 Bundesliga appearances in the first half of the season ) defended alongside newcomer Salif Sané (17), the central defense of three central defenders was supplemented with either Stambouli (8, one of which was a substitute) or Naldo (7). Nevertheless, in October 2018, Naldo extended his contract until June 30, 2020.

AS Monaco

After Naldo had lost his regular place at FC Schalke 04, he left the Bundesliga at the beginning of January 2019 after 13 ½ years and switched to French Ligue 1 to AS Monaco , which was threatened with relegation , where he received a contract with a term until June 30, 2020. By the end of the season he was under the head coach Thierry Henry and his successor Leonardo Jardim in 7 league games (5 times from the start). Naldo saw the red card in his second and third game . Under Jardim, the runner-up of the preseason could finally achieve relegation. Without another competitive game in the following season under Jardim and his successor Robert Moreno , Naldo and the club agreed on January 17, 2020 to terminate the contract that was still valid until the end of the season.

National team

On March 14, 2007 Naldo was nominated for the first time for the Seleção . Together with his teammate Diego , Naldo was appointed for the international test matches of the national team against the selection of Turkey and England and for the South American Championship , which took place from June 26 to July 15, 2007 in Venezuela . He made his debut on June 1, 2007 at the new Wembley Stadium in a 1-1 draw against England in the starting line-up. The following month he won the South American Championship with the team, but was unable to establish himself in the national team despite his good performances in the Bundesliga. Naldo played his fourth and so far last international match in August of the same year. In 2009 he was nominated by Dunga again for the national team, but was not used.

Style of play

Naldo is said to have an excellent positional play, and he also impresses with good technique. Naldo is known for very hard shots, especially with free kicks. In addition, due to his air superiority in the opposing penalty area, he was able to score goals according to standards (mostly with his head), which made Naldo one of the most dangerous central defenders in the Bundesliga at the time.
