Matija Nastasić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Матија Настасић ; born March 28, 1993 in Valjevo , Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian football player who has been under contract with FC Schalke 04 since mid-January 2015 . He is a Serbian international .

Club career

Beginnings in Serbia

From his hometown Valjevo , Matija Nastasić moved as a teenager to the Serbian top club Partizan Belgrade . There he went through the youth teams of the club. In order to get match practice, the young central defender was loaned to Partizan's farm team and Serbian second division club Teleoptik Zemun for a year . After this engagement he left Partizan for 2.5 million euros and moved to the Italian club Fiorentina .

AC Florence

Nastasić played for Florence since the summer of 2011. He missed the last two games of the 2011/12 season due to a knee injury. In retrospect, Nastasić only prevailed permanently in Florence from the 11th matchday on, was then able to call up his performance consistently well and moved into the field of vision of several top clubs. Nevertheless, Fiorentina only finished 13th in the final table.

Manchester City

In August 2012, Manchester City signed the center-back for a transfer fee of £ 15.2 million. In addition, Stefan Savić , who had also previously come from Partizan, moved to Florence. In England he was able to fight for a regular place under Roberto Mancini . He was a regular player in both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons and was able to celebrate the English championship in 2014. However, he missed many games in the championship season due to a knee injury. In the 2013/14 Champions League season they were only eliminated in the round of 16 against FC Barcelona . Under Manuel Pellegrini , however, Nastasić no longer played a role in the squad planning and was only used once in the Community Shield .

FC Schalke 04

On January 12, 2015, FC Schalke 04 announced that it was on loan to the Bundesliga club from Gelsenkirchen . Nastasić made his competitive debut at the start of the second half of the 2014/15 season . In March 2015, Nastasić was committed for 9.5 million euros and given a contract until June 30, 2019. At the end of the season there were 16 competitive games. For the 2015/16 season he formed the central defense of Schalke with Joel Matip , as Benedikt Höwedes was absent due to an injury. On August 15, 2015, he tore his Achilles tendon in the league game against Werder Bremen and was out for the rest of the season. He only made his comeback in the league on September 9, 2016, the second match day of the following season 2016/17, in the 2-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich . As a result, he was able to re-establish himself in Schalke's central defense, but was repeatedly thrown back by minor injuries, but mostly returned to the matchday squad after his recovery. On April 12, 2019, the 29th matchday of the 2018/19 season, Nastasić scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg in his 87th league game for Schalke.

His contract runs until June 30, 2022.

National team

In 2009 he played his first international match for the Serbian U-17s . In 2010 he made his debut for the U-19s , but was already scheduled for the U-21 squad in 2011 . There they missed the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship 2013 in Israel only in the playoff games against England. In the friendly against Cyprus on February 29, 2012 Nastasić made his international debut for the Serbian national team .
