FA Community Shield
The FA Community Shield (formerly known as the Charity Shield ) is a trophy of the English Football Association . It goes annually to the winner of the game between the English Premier League champion and the FA Cup winner .
history
Today's Community Shield emerged from the Sheriff of London Charity Shield , which was held from 1898 to 1907 between the professional master and the amateur master. After the break of the more successful amateur teams with the FA, this competition was discontinued. In 1908 the champions of the Football League First Division Newcastle United played in the first Charity Shield against the Queens Park Rangers , who had become champions of the Southern League . The format of the competition has changed over the years. It was not until 1921 that the cup was first played between champions and cup winners.
In the 1920s professional selection teams competed against amateur selection teams against each other (1923–1926, 1929). It was not until 1930 that the games between cup winners and champions became the rule. There were only a few exceptions to this rule:
- In 1950, the FA World Championship selection played against a team from the FA that had completed a promotional tour in Canada.
- In 1961, Tottenham Hotspur won the double . Tottenham competed against an FA selection team.
- In 1971, Arsenal decided not to appear after winning the double. Sun played Leicester City , champion of the Second Division, against Liverpool , inferior Cup finalist.
- 1972 both the champions Derby County and the cup winners Leeds United waived the game. It was then played between Manchester City , fourth in the First Division , and Aston Villa , champions of the Third Division .
In 1974, Edgar Alfred Ted Croker, Secretary of the Football Association, changed the format of the cup. It was decided that the cup winner would play against the winner of the First Division at Wembley Stadium .
In 2002 the Charity Shield was renamed Community Shield.
mode
The game is played between champions and cup winners. If a team wins the double (league championship and cup), the double winner plays against the second in the league for the Community Shield. Traditionally, the game is played at Wembley Stadium a week before the start of the regular season.
The title was divided eleven times due to a tie (1949, 1954, 1960, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1977, 1981, 1986, 1990, 1991). In 1974 and since 1994, overtime is not played in the event of a tie, but the winner is determined by penalty shoot-out.

Originally, the match was played on a neutral pitch or on the pitch of one of the two opponents. In addition to the three specified stadiums, which have been played since 1974, there were previously 17 stadiums in which the Charity Shield was played. The first stadium was Stamford Bridge in London in 1908 and the last in 1973 on Manchester's Maine Road .
The location of the Community Shield for 2012 has long been unclear. Both Wembley Stadium and Millennium Stadium were occupied for the Olympic football competitions. The Sports Direct Arena ( Newcastle ), Stadium of Light ( Sunderland ), Villa Park ( Birmingham ), Old Trafford ( Manchester ) and City of Manchester Stadium (Manchester) were discussed as alternative locations . In January 2012 it was decided that the Community Shield would take place in Villa Park in Birmingham.
Only one game was played in eight stadiums. These are: St. James' Park (Newcastle) 1932, Roker Park (Sunderland) 1936, Burnden Park ( Bolton ) 1958, Turf Moor ( Burnley ) 1960, Portman Road ( Ipswich ) 1962, Anfield (Liverpool) 1964, Elland Road ( Leeds ) 1969 and Filbert Street ( Leicester ) 1971. Ten stadiums have hosted the competition on multiple occasions.
Of all the stadiums used for this competition, five are no longer in service: Roker Park , Burnden Park , Filbert Street , Highbury and Maine Road in Manchester.
