Benjamin Fernand Lucien Francois Stambouli (born August 13, 1990 in Marseille ) is a French football player .

Career

After various positions as a youth player, Stambouli moved to HSC Montpellier in 2004 . For the 2010/11 season he made the leap into the first team. In the 2011/12 season he was French champion with HSC Montpellier. He came to 26 missions this season. The following season he played with the club for the first time in the UEFA Champions League . HSC Montpellier was eliminated as the bottom of the group, Stambouli made four appearances. In September 2014 he moved to the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur .

In July 2015, the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain signed Stambouli until 2020. After 40 competitive appearances for PSG, he moved to FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga in August 2016 . He received a contract running until June 30, 2020 and the number 17 on his shirt. At the beginning of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season , Stambouli was appointed deputy team captain by coach Domenico Tedesco to replace Naldo, who had migrated to AS Monaco during the winter break . Since captain Ralf Fährmann was demoted to goalkeeper number 2 by Tedesco, Stambouli often wore the captain's armband as his representative during the season. In the second half of the season he suffered a broken cheekbone in the 2-2 draw against Hertha BSC (January 26, 2019), which had to be operated on. After a month's break from injury, he made his comeback in the 4-0 defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf (02.03.2019). As a result, Stambouli had to wear a protective mask made of carbon when playing games . After the Düsseldorf game, Stambouli came into the media spotlight when two Schalke fans asked him to wear the captain's armband with the inscription "Nordkurve", which the fans after the runner-up in 2017/18 Schalke's first captain Ralf Fährmann as a sign of the solidarity between fans and given players to give back because the team was not worthy of them. Stambouli then returned the captain's armband.

On August 4, 2020, his contract was extended to 2023.
