In November 2013 he signed a professional contract that ran until 2016, but was still only used in test matches, for example a game against the Sudanese champions Al-Merrikh as part of the winter training camp in Doha ( Qatar ). With the second team he finished second and once first in the Regionalliga Bayern, in his last game for the amateurs of FC Bayern he missed the intended promotion to the 3rd division in stoppage time against Fortuna Köln .

1. FC Nuremberg

FC Schalke 04

On January 9, 2016, Schöpf moved to Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 for a transfer fee of 5 million euros (plus bonus payments) , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. He made his Bundesliga debut on January 30, 2016 in a 2-0 win in the away game against SV Darmstadt 98 . At the end of the season he had scored three goals and provided three assists in 13 Bundesliga games.

For the 2016/17 season , coach André Breitenreiter was replaced by Markus Weinzierl . On April 28, 2017, Schöpf tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the second half of the match in Leverkusen and was out for several months. In the 2016/17 season he was mainly used in the right defensive midfield. At the end of the season in which he was tenth with Schalke, he had scored six goals and provided two assists in 28 games in the Bundesliga. In the Europa League he was eliminated with Schalke in the quarter-finals against Ajax Amsterdam , he was used in ten of the twelve games, twice over the full playing time.

In the 2017/18 season he came to individual missions from October after a recovered injury, he was not in the starting XI again until December. On February 15, 2018, Schöpf extended his contract term to 2021. In the season that Schalke finished as runner-up under the new coach Domenico Tedesco , Schöpf made 15 league appearances. In addition, there were four appearances in the DFB Cup , in which Schalke were just inferior to the eventual cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals . Schöpf played in that semifinals as well as in the quarterfinals against VfL Wolfsburg for the full season.

In the first few months of the 2018/19 season there was a constant change between the starting eleven and substitutes for Schöpf. With second place in the previous season, Schalke had qualified for the Champions League . In the very first group game, a 1-1 draw against FC Porto , Schöpf played his first Champions League game over the full playing time. With his team he managed to qualify for the round of 16.

National team

On September 15, 2009 Schöpf came as a substitute for his international debut at a game of the Austrian U16 national team in Slovakia. Four more assignments for the U16 followed by May 2010. He played his next international match in October 2011 for the U18s in a 1: 2 defeat in Zurich against Switzerland. This was his only assignment for the U18. Between March 2012 and June 2013 he played ten games for the U19 national team , including several qualifying games for the European Championships in 2012 and 2013 , for which Austria was unable to qualify. For the U19, he scored two goals in those ten games. From August 2013 he played a total of 20 times for the U21 national team and scored eight goals. However, the qualification for the U21 European Championship 2015 in the Czech Republic failed.

He made his debut for the senior national team on March 26, 2016 in a 2-1 win in the test international against the selection from Albania . He scored his first international goal in his third game on May 31, 2016 in a 2-1 win in the friendly against Malta with the goal of 2-0 in the 18th minute.

He was substituted on in all three group matches at the 2016 European Championships in France. In the last game against Iceland he came into the game after the half-time break and scored the only tournament goal for the Austrians with the goal to make it 1-1. The team still lost and was eliminated from the tournament after the group games.

After eleven appearances for the senior national team, Schöpf made one last appearance for the U21s in the decisive final qualifying game for the 2017 U21 European Championship in November 2016 . Austria scored 0-0 in the relegation second leg against Spain, but after the 1-1 home game this result was enough for the Spaniards to reach the European Championship in Poland due to the away goals rule . Schöpf was sent off with a disputed yellow-red card in the 81st minute of the game. This meant that he was banned from the senior national team's next World Cup qualifier, Schöpf missed the rest of the ultimately unsuccessful World Cup qualification due to his cruciate ligament injury in Leverkusen in April 2017 and was only used again for his country from November 2017. On June 2, 2018, he scored the 2-1 winning goal for the Austrian national team in the test match against Germany in Klagenfurt and thus contributed to the first victory of an ÖFB selection against the German national team since 1986.
