Bear Hands (German: Bärenhände ) is an indie rock band from New York founded in 2006 . It consists of the singer Dylan Rau, the bassist Val Loper and the drummer TJ Orscher.

history

Bear Hands (2009)

Foundation and first steps

Dylan Rau and Ted Feldman met early on at Weslayan University in Connecticut . The more experienced musicians Loper and Orscher only joined the incomplete band later; they were already established in the punk scene. According to Orscher, the band immediately worked optimally at the first rehearsal together and they quickly began to write songs. A few months after the band was founded, in 2007 they released their first EP, Golden , through which they became more and more involved in the New York music scene.

Connections to MGMT

The band is said to have a good connection to the American indietronic band MGMT , not least because they are musically very similar. In fact, Rau said in an interview: “I studied with Andrew and Ben from MGMT at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. [...] We played at the Wesleyan before one of their performances. That's about it. ”The members of both bands are hardly in contact with each other.

Since 2010

In 2010 the band released their debut album Burning Bush Supper Club . Although they landed a flop with the album, their contract with the label was terminated and they had to fire their manager, they went on tour as the opening act for greats such as Passion Pit or We Were Promised Jetpacks . This was followed by a four-year artistic break, briefly interrupted in 2012 by the EP Songs From Utopia Vol. 1 , which only came to an end with the release of the album Distraction in 2014. Real experiences of the band leader Rau flowed into this album, such as his agoraphobia (fear of the outside world), because of which he and his roommate at the time no longer left the house and neglected social life.

On April 15, 2016, the band's third studio album You'll Pay For This was released on the Spensive Sound label , from which the single 2AM was released in advance .

In the following years it became quieter around the band until they announced the resignation of founding member and guitarist Ted Feldmann on Twitter in spring 2018 . At the same time they announced work on new songs and shortly afterwards released the single Back Seat Driver (Spirit Guide) .
