Career

societies

Mascarells began playing football when he was five years old at UD Santa Cruz , a club from his birthplace. Through the clubs based in Tegueste and San Cristóbal de La Laguna on the Canary Island of Tenerife , he finally got into the youth department of Real Madrid in 2010 . There he started at the age of 17 in the A youth team Juvenil A and moved up to Real Madrid Castilla's second team after just one season , where he was first used on August 21, 2011. Mascarell could not secure a regular place in the central midfield and mostly had to let his teammates Álex Fernández and Pedro Mosquera go ahead. In the 2012/13 season, Mascarell was a member of the branch team, but played games for third division Real Madrid C at the same time . His only competitive game for the first division team Reals, he played as a substitute under coach José Mourinho on the last day of the 2012/13 season against CA Osasuna .

For the 2014/15 season he moved on loan to the English second division club Derby County . The 2015/16 season he played on loan for the Spanish first division club Sporting Gijón .

For the 2016/17 season he signed a three-year contract with the German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt . After 28 Bundesliga appearances in the 2016/17 season , including 27 in the starting line-up, he only played nine league games and three in the cup in his subsequent second season at Eintracht due to injuries. In May 2018, Mascarell won the DFB Cup with Eintracht after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final .

In June 2018 Real Madrid made use of its buyback option for four million euros and then immediately sold Mascarell to FC Schalke 04 for ten million euros . The player signed a four-year contract. For the 2019/20 season he was appointed vice-captain. During the following winter break, head coach David Wagner finally transferred the office of full-time captain to the Spaniard after the change of the actual captain Alexander Nübel to Bayern was announced.

National team

Mascarell took part in training camps of the Spanish U18 , U19 and U20 national teams from 2011 to 2013 , but did not play a final tournament for these age groups. In May 2012 he was appointed to the squad of the Equatorial Guinean national team as part of the World Cup qualification , as his father has his roots in this country. Mascarell agreed, but on the condition not to play a competitive game for the Africans in order not to lose the opportunity to play for Spain in the future.
