Matthias Herget (born November 14, 1955 in Annaberg-Buchholz ) is a former German soccer player .

societies

Herget played as a libero 1976-1989 a total of 237 times (26 goals) for the VfL Bochum and Bayer 05 Uerdingen in the Bundesliga . In the 2nd Bundesliga he played a total of 196 games for Rot-Weiss Essen , Bayer Uerdingen and FC Schalke 04 and scored 43 goals.

One of the highlights of his career - in addition to winning the 1985 DFB Cup with Bayer Uerdingen against FC Bayern Munich - was the second leg in the quarter-finals of the 1986 European Cup Winners' Cup : Bayer beat Dynamo Dresden 7: 3 after the first leg in Dresden had been lost 2-0 and Bayer Uerdingen were down 3-1 after just under an hour in the second leg.

On September 13, 1980, in the home game against Holstein Kiel , Herget scored a “flawless” hat trick for RW Essen , where he scored all goals from penalties . He is the only player in German professional football who has achieved this so far.

Herget scored the goal of the month for ARD Sportschau twice in Bundesliga games and once in an international match :

  • on August 20, 1983 in the game Bayer Uerdingen against Eintracht Frankfurt the goal to 2: 0 (final score 5: 2),
  • on March 22, 1986 in the game Hamburger SV against Bayer Uerdingen the goal to 0: 2 (final score 1: 4), and
  • on September 25, 1985 in the World Cup qualifier Sweden against Germany, the goal to 0: 2 (final score 2: 2).

Herget ended his career as a soccer player in the 2nd Bundesliga at FC Schalke 04 in 1990.

National team

With the German national team , Herget made 39 appearances between 1983 and 1988, in which he scored four goals. With the German selection, he took part in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and the 1988 European Football Championship in Germany.

Probably the biggest disappointment for him was the interplay of the libero position in the DFB national team in the summer of 1986. Shortly before the participation , which was rewarded for the Beckenbauer team with the vice world championship , Herget was first received by Klaus Augenthaler and after the Bayern professional had been injured , replaced by Ditmar Jakobs .

At the European Championship in 1988 he played all games from the start. In the semi-final game, in which Germany was eliminated against the Netherlands , he was substituted for Hans Pflügler during the break .

After the active career

Herget was a trainer in the amateur field, u. a. at Sportfreunde Eisbachtal in the Oberliga Südwest and 1. FC Bocholt in the Regionalliga West / Südwest . Since 1994 he has worked for various football schools and gives seminars for amateur coaches. In April 2013 Herget became the sporting director of the upper division club Schwarz-Weiß Essen as the successor to Dirk Helmig .
