The SC Gelsenkirchen was a sports club in Gelsenkirchen . The first soccer team played in the highest Westphalian amateur league for seven years.

history

The club was founded in August 1907 as SV Viktoria Schalke . At the first general meeting in the following year, it was decided to rename it to SV Urania Gelsenkirchen 07 . The founders of the association came from the working class. The application for membership in the West German Game Association (WSV) was initially rejected. The driving forces behind the rejection of the association were local rivals SuS Schalke 96 and BV Gelsenkirchen . Only after the Urania merged with the Bismarck gymnastics club in 1912 was it accepted into the WSV. Shortly before the end of the First World War , the name was changed to SC Gelsenkirchen 07 .

In 1920 the SC was promoted to the first-class Ruhr-Emscher district league , where the 07er became champions straight away. At the following championship in the Ruhrgau, the Gelsenkirchen team came second behind the Dortmund SC 95 . In the following years, the SC fought with Union Gelsenkirchen for sporting supremacy in the city. In 1925, the 07er to Michel Gogalla were runner-up in the Ruhrgauliga behind Schwarz-Weiß Essen . At this time, the future national player Ernst Kuzorra was a regular guest at the home games of the 07er. Kuzorras club FC Schalke 04 became first class in 1926 and took over local supremacy. In 1929 the 07er descended after a playoff defeat against STV Horst-Emscher , but returned to the top class a year later when the Ruhr district league was increased. In 1932 it went back to the second division, so that the team missed the Gauliga Westfalen , which was introduced in 1933 .

After the Second World War , the SC 07 was promoted to the Landesliga Westfalen in 1947 , which was then the highest Westphalian amateur league, and reached fourth place in the promotion season. A year later, the club gave up a place in the newly introduced II. Division and rose in 1950 to the 2nd regional league. Two years later it went down to the district class, before the sporting decline stopped in 1955 with the descent into the district class. It was not until the early 1960s that the club experienced a renaissance, when the 07er, after three consecutive promotions, were promoted to the Association League Westphalia in 1966 and thus returned to the highest Westphalian amateur league. In 1970 it went down to the national league.

Six years later, the SC 07 was runner-up in the regional league behind VfL Gevelsberg . In 1978 the team was again runner-up and rose thanks to the increased promotion in the course of the introduction of the Oberliga Westfalen in the association league. After fourth place in the 1978/79 promotion season, the 07er went back to mediocrity, before relegated again in 1982. Financial problems finally led to the dissolution of the association in 1984.
