In 1931 Union reached the final round of the West German Championship. The club benefited from the fact that local rivals FC Schalke 04 were suspended because of the professional player affair. In the preliminary round group 1, Union finished fourth and last. Two years later, the club was not included in the newly created Gauliga Westfalen .

In 1938, the team missed the Gauliga ascent after they finished second in the promotion round with one point behind Prussia Münster . Two years later, Union was able to prevail in the promotion round. As the penultimate, the team immediately dismounted. Union lost 7-1 at home against local rivals Schalke 04. A return to the Gauliga did not succeed. After the end of World War II , Union was included in the Landesliga Westfalen . As eighth of the 1946/47 season, the team missed qualification for the newly created Oberliga West .

Two years in the regional league followed before Union was one of the founding members of the 2nd Division West in 1949 . There the team was bottom of the table. For financial reasons, Union merged on June 30, 1950 with local rivals Alemannia Gelsenkirchen to form Eintracht Gelsenkirchen .
