Andrea Fortunato (born July 26, 1971 in Salerno , † April 25, 1995 in Perugia ) was an Italian football player .
Life
In the early 1990s, Fortunato was one of the greatest hopes in Italian football, he started his professional career in the 1989/90 season at Como Calcio in Serie B . His team relegated to Serie C at the end of this season and Fortunato became a regular player the following season. Good performance attracted the interest of larger clubs.
In the summer of 1991 he moved to Genoa , from which it first for one year to Pisa Calcio was loaned to Serie B and then in the 1992/93 season in the Serie A debut. After his first season in Genoa, he was signed by Juventus Turin in the summer of 1993 , where he became a regular in Serie A straight away.
On September 22, 1993 he had under Arrigo Sacchi at the game in Tallinn against Estonia his only use in the national team .
In May 1994 Andrea Fortunato was diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia . After several operations, he seemed to have won the battle against the disease. However, his body was still very weak in the following years and so Fortunato became infected with a virus and died a few days later, on April 25, 1995, at the age of only 23, of pneumonia .
The Italian public, especially his family and his teammates from Juventus, were shocked. His best friend, Fabrizio Ravanelli , immediately left a meeting of the national team. Andrea Fortunato posthumously won the Scudetto , which his team naturally dedicated to him.
Today there is a foundation for combating leukemia, which is named after him.
“Non immaginavo quanto può essere meravigliosa anche una semplice passeggiata.”
"I couldn't imagine how wonderful a simple walk can be."
