Maikel Zijlaard (born June 1, 1999 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch cyclist.

Athletic career

Maikel Zijlaard comes from a cycling family: his grandfather is the popular Derny pacemaker Joop Zijlaard , his aunt is the four-time Olympic champion Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel , who is married to the cyclist Michael Zijlaard . His older sister Nicky was also a cyclist. His father Ron Zijlaard is active as a pacemaker , also for his son.

In 2016 and 2017 Zijlaard had several successes in international junior races, for example he won a stage of the Sint-Martinusprijs Kontich in 2016 and the Tour of Flanders for juniors in 2017 . In 2018 he signed his first contract with Hagens Berman Axeon . In 2019 he became Dutch champion in the single pursuit as well as in the team pursuit on the track with Enzo Leijnse , Casper van Uden , Vincent Hoppezak and Philip Heijnen . The following year he switched to the SEG Racing Academy team .
