UCI Track World Championships 2003
The 93rd UCI Track World Championships took place from July 30th to August 3rd, 2003 in the " Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle " in Stuttgart . There were 15 disciplines on the program. A total of 15,000 spectators saw the competitions in the hall, which was almost unbearably hot in midsummer, which made some athletes difficult. 301 athletes from 38 countries took part.
The World Championships were originally supposed to take place in Shenzhen , China , but were then relocated to Stuttgart at short notice due to the SARS epidemic in Southeast Asia.
The German roster included the athletes:
- Women : Christina Becker , Kathrin Freitag , Katrin Meinke , Christin Muche , Susan Panzer , Anke Wichmann
- Men : Christian Bach , Robert Bartko , Daniel Becke , Robert Bengsch , Carsten Bergemann , Jan van Eijden , Jens Fiedler , Guido Fulst , Matthias John , Sven Krauß , Sören Lausberg , Jens Lehmann , Andreas Müller , Stefan Nimke , Sebastian Siedler , René Wolff
The Association of German Cyclists expected eight medals in advance, but only three were won. In addition, there was a scandal in the team pursuit : The German four-wheeler did not qualify because the drivers Lehmann, Becke, Siedler and Bach had refused to start together with Bartko and Fulst. The background was Lehmann's resentment about not having been nominated for the persecution . Instead, Bartko had been nominated, who in Lehmann's opinion had not qualified. World champion in team pursuit was the four-wheeler from Australia with a new world record time of 3: 57.280 minutes.
The most successful athlete in the men's World Cup was Franco Marvulli from Switzerland with two gold medals, one in scratch and one in a two-man team with Bruno Risi. Marvulli was nominated for the scratch competition at short notice after a training accident of his teammate Alexander Aeschbach.
Two Russian women dominated the women's race: Svetlana Grankovskaya and Olga Slyusareva each won two gold medals.
Gold was also won by Austrian rider Franz Stocher , who was not only the first Austrian to win a World Championship gold medal in track cycling, but also the first ever World Championship gold medal for Austria in an Olympic cycling discipline.
