Belem Guerrero Méndez (born March 8, 1974 in Mexico City ) is a former Mexican cyclist who was active on track and road . Together with her compatriot Nancy Contreras, she was one of the dominant female cyclists in her country in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Athletic career

Belem Guerrero's specialty was scoring . In 1997 she was able to place herself on the podium for the first time in this discipline at the UCI track world championships when she was third in Perth . Further successes in scoring at the World Track Championships were second place in Bordeaux in 1997 , Antwerp in 2001 and third place in Melbourne in 2004 .

At the Pan American Games in 2007 in Valencia , Venezuela , Belem Guerrero won the points race on the track and at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in the same year , she finished second in the road race .

Guerrero took part in the Olympic Games three times, in 1996 in Atlanta , 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens . At the Games in Athens she won a silver medal in the points race, in the road race she finished 46th.

In July 2008, Belem Guerrero Méndez announced her retirement from active cycling.

doping

In 1998 Guerrero was tested positive for the drug pseudoephedrine on the occasion of the Central American and Caribbean Games and had to return the medals she had won there.

Professional

After finishing her cycling career, Belem Guerrero became Minister of Sport in the state of Mexico (as of 2014).
